Q: Problems with SMB and file sharing in Lion

Apple just released an update to 10.7.4 for the HP software. Your fix no longer works.

so friggin flustered.  i am on ML 10.8 and i havent been able to get my c352 to scan to my mac since 10.6.  this is bs.

I doubt that you will ever be able to, Apple switch to a newer SMB protocal that older products do not support.

If you think you have it bad , I have two $8K HP printers that can not scan to my 10.7 MacOS servers, imagine how happy I am.

is there a way for me to have the MFP scan to a network drive?  or Dropbox?

I'd be steamed at HP. $8K for a printer and they kiss off any suppor? That's par for the course with HP. Actually, in this case (or in the case of my 8500 Pro) Apple covered HP and took over the software. Apple's version is also more convenient than HP. With the HP version, you had to direct everything to one folder then rename and move it where you want to. Apple's driver allows you to name and locate at scan time.

You are able to use hp's 8500 pro's 'scan to network folder' option, from the scanner's led touchscreen? What is your setup configuration? I haven't been able touse this feature since the upgrade to Lion, (currently on Mountain Lion), and this feature was one of the main reasons for buying this model. If you are able to do this, please let me know how it is setup, since I haven't been able to figure it out.

No, not from the scanner's led touchscreen. That's HP's firmware. Doesn't work. Use Apple's App. It knows how to access the scanner. First rate piece of software. It's the Officejet Pro 8500.app in your Library/Printers folder. Don't worry about a setup configuration. I just put in permanently in my Dock so that it's handy.

your SMBUp software helped get access to my folders, however i cant see the files that are in the folders. im trying to access them via XMBC. im running ML on my macbook pro. am i doing something wrong? any suggestions on how i can view the files

Thank you for the information and the link to your SMBUp program.  I too, like many others, am trying to get the SMB capabilities working between my imac (mountain lion 10.8) and printer (HP Officejet 8500).  I'm at a bit of a loss as I've followed all the recommendations, but to no avail.

I've checked that my NetBIOS name is the same at the name within Samba/SMBUp (BIG-MAC).  Folder has been shared with all the proper permissions using SMB.  I'm using the same network path within the network folder config as listed within SMBUp shared drive window.  Yet when I try to test my settings I constantly get the message that it cannot connect.  Arrrgh.  Do you have any further insight, or can I provide any other information that would be helpful in figuring this out?

Hopefully my experience will b helpful. I did get it to work, and work consistently.

My HPOJ Pro 8500 stopped communicating with my iMac after I installed Lion; but continued to work fine with my wife's MBP running Snow Leopard. Although the 8500 cannot "find" and communicate with the Mac, the Mac can find and communicate with the 8500 w/o difficulty. Ignore any Hp software and drivers provided by HP with your 8500. HP does not update. Apple provides and regularly updates drivers and utilities for the 8500. In fact, the Apple scan software is far superior to what HP provided -- even when it did work.It's all point and click and allows you to scan to any file / folder on your computer -- including adding to an existing .pdf.

When you refer to Apple's software finding the printer, do you mean the 'TWAIN' driver? This is generally referred to as 'pull scanning' and will work.  What most of us struggle with is the ability to 'push scan', i.e. the scanner initiating the contact with the Mac on either Lion or Mountain Lion over a network connection instead of a USB cable.

In most offices where they use a variety of MFDs from different manufacturers, this still doesn't work because of the change Apple made. The only manufacturer of office equipment that I know off that does work is Konica Minolta, but only after they installed a firmware update (this has to be done separately as it doesn't come as default) to accomodate the change and only to models launched in the last two years.  That of course begs the questions why others don't do the same as Konica Minolta, however it's up to each manufacturer to make those changes.  Ricoh has promised to do the same, but so far nothing has changed.  As for the others like HP, Canon, Xerox, Lexmark etc. you need to push them to do the same.

Hopefully that clarifies the scenario a bit.

Not a driver, but a Print & Scan utility specifically for the 8500. Don't know whether it includes its own driver or accesses someting else in Apple's OS X. Too much into the weeds for my capability. It is definitely "pull scanning" rather than "push scanning". I suspect you're correct about it being a firmware issue -- which is likely why you can't write something at the other end to patch in (unless you downgrade everything to Snow Leopard (which is always an option, it that one feature is that important). I'm more interested in getting something to work, and as I said, the Apple utility is a substantial improvement in capability. Getting a lot of people to share an 8500 might be easier with a low-tech solution -- put an "In Use" sign on the scanner until the scan is pulled. Best of luck trying to get these guys to update their firmware. But in their "defense" (?) updating firmware adds to cost and subtracts from sales. These guys are in the business of selling hardware not software; and the 8500, although a good little work horse, is hardly an expensive high-end unit.

I appreciate the advice.  I think you're right, the 'pull scanning' is the better way to go.  Apple's scanning software works just fine.  I'm wasting my time & brain cells trying to get the 'scan to network folder' function working.

I have a Mac Mini 2011 Model running Mountain Lion, I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium, and my home network is on an Airport Extreme (running Airport Utility 6.1). I too can't get the scanner to connect like it did under Snow Leopard. But I can access the Scanner under the 'SHARED' menu on the left side of the Finder menu - under the FAVORITES menu. I have a USB thumb drive I leave in the scanner. I just choose to scan to Memory Device from the HP touchscreen, scan and when finished with all my scans I acces the file from the Finder menu. I haven't specially configured anything (now maybe on accident - haha). This is just about the same effect as the old Scan to Computer feature. I can look into my settings if someone is needing help to replicate the same setup.
