No Audio In FCPX Timeline, But It's In The Clip Window

Look at the Edit->Source Media menu. Chances are that it is set to "Video only".

If that is the case, when you drag a clip to the timeline only its video will be used - seems to be the problem you are both experiencing...

So if a Multicam Clip (or any other clip) is put (inserted) into the timeline without audio, and then cut up with transitions, can the audio be put back into the clip without losing the cuts, or transitions?

If so, can you tell us how it can be done?

You mean you dragged a multicam clip to the timeline, cut it and only later realized it had no audio??? How come you did not notice that while editing?

Well, I suppose you can still fix it, piece by piece (it seems to work in a little test I've done):

1- reenable Video and Audio (Shift-1, or Edit->Source Media->All)

2- repeat for each part of the multicam in timeline: select; Shift-F to match frame in the browser; drag it from the browser over the selected clip in the timeline; choose Replace.

Yes! Due to time constraints, and just trying to figure out Multicam editing, I inserted two instances of the Multicam onto the timeline. One with Video only, and the other with Audio only. Cut it up and put transitions on about 1/3 of a live video shoot. I guess I though I could change it later? Anyway to make a long story short, I went back and figured out how to use just one audio for the Multicam clip, and by this time it was too late.

I'm having exactly the same issue. When I do 'Open in Timeline' I can hear the audio but when I go back to the project timeline it doesn't play again. It also plays the audio in the preview window, just not from the main timeline. Any ideas?

Chances are your current project (timeline) is setup as "Surround Sound" audio but your audio monitoring is only capable of stereo. Click on the Project Libray, select your project, click on the info button, then select the little wrench tool on the right. From the popup menu, choose Stereo rather than Surround in Audio Channel menu. That should do the trick!

That fixed it! Thank you so much. I could not figure it out. I'm curious why FCP would default to Surround Sound for the project when I imported iPhone video footage. Good to know for the future though.

I cannot hear anything on any of my projects or in any of my event foldera. I tried checking the audio and it's still in "stereo" I went to event media and it's on 'all'. I'm so aggravated. Why is this happening? also, the volume on my computer is on high and there are no headphones plugged in. today is just not my day when it comes to electronics.

I have exactly the same problem I checked all the suggestions here but still have no sound unless I click on open in timeline but as soon as I switch back the sound is gone.

Are you sure the audio is there in the project? Do you see the audio waveforms?

Could you accidentally have set Edit->Source Media to "video only"?

In the picture below, you can see two clips, one with audio, one without.

Audio in Clip Viewer but not when dropped in the Timeline. I attempted the fixes suggested in this thread but I'm using FCP Version 4.0.1 (old, I know) and the steps given aren't the same. The first part of my project has audio in the Timeline...I'm guessing I clicked or unchecked something...I've looked everywhere and can't figure it out. Even pulled out the manual! Let me know if you have any suggestions and thank you in advance!

I have not used older versions in a while, but I guess you may have disconnected the little "a1" from the big "A1" as seen in the image below. Drag to reconnect them. If this is not it, then I can only suggest you ask this in the Final Cut Studio forum (or Final Cut Express forum - I imagine that is what you are using).

We are having a similar issue at school, we have checked and make sure that under source media we have selected ALL not VIDEO ONLY, but we are still having the issue. The clip in both places the viewer and the timeline the sources are selected to ALL (video and audio). Any other suggestions?

I struggled with this issue for the past few days before I figured out two possible solutions that haven't been mentioned yet in this forum.

One, relink your files. This one seems obvious but this is the fix that had me stumped for days. I had already relinked all the files when I opened the project. Or so I thought. But then a few hours later, just for giggles, I tried another relink. That time, it found even more files that needed to be linked. That made no sense to me because ALL project files were glommed together in one folder -- no subfolders. So, why didn't it pick up all the files the first go around? Whatever. After the second relink, more files appears in the timeline, but I still was lacking the audio for about 10 clips.

After fiddling around for another hour, I found a second option for fixing this issue. Right click your audio clip and hover over the "Active Audio Angle" option. If there's more than one source or version of the audio file associated with the video clip (for instance, if you used a shotgun mic OR if you PluralEyesed the audio to sync it up), you can select those other audio files to use with your video.

That of course was not the final fix for me, though, because the other audio files were not as good as the PluralEyes version I wanted to use (which, for some reason, was present with the video in the timeline but was lacking any presence of audio levels). So, what I ended up doing to FINALLY get this audio issue resolved was I relinked files for the project a THIRD time and FINALLY it got the last few bits linked up.

How crazy is that? I had to relink files THREE times in ONE folder to get all the files.

The Verdict Is: Forget Final Cut Pro X. Switch to Adobe Premiere. It is WAY more intuitive and user friendly.
