Soundtrack Tempo

I am having difficulty with the tempo envelope in Soundtrack. I do not seem to able to alter the tempo of AIFF files imported from iTunes. There is no problem when changing the tempo of loops, but it just dosen't seem to work with imported songs. Any help on how I could do this would be appreciated.
