MiniDisplay to HDMi not working with second monitor on brand new iMac 27 inch (thunderbolt)

Brand new iMac 27 inch, bought Friday, upgraded to Lion. I plugged in my MiniDisplayport to HDMI adapter (which previously worked fine on my 13 inch macbook and the same Samsung monitor) into the Thunderbolt port of the iMac. The second monitor will not work, is not detected even going thru Preferences.

Any help appreciated.
