SD card not showing

Hi;

I have been successfully downloading pix from my camera by inserting the SD card into a slot in my monitor (Dell). Today, the SD card does not show up as a drive. I tried other SD cards to no avail. I then inserted the SD card back into the camera and connected with the supplied USB cable. Still nix.

What has happened?

Hi BD;

Resetting the PRAM did not work. I'll now try resetting the PMU. According to the Apple Support article, the location of the PMU button varies with different editions (Digital Audio, Cube, CPI, etc.). How do I find out which is my edition. The pix don't seem to match what I have.

By the way, I have an external LaCie drive (FireWire) that shows up on the Finder.

Thanks;

Chris

Hi BD;

Found the little sucker (smaller than I thought and not where any of the sample layouts shown but marked PMU reset) and pressed it — I think I did, because got no tactile feedback that I did anything.

Nada.

I tried mounting it with Disk Utilities but the mount button is grayed out.

I tried using a different camera that worked previously. Nope.

Checked and swithed the USB cable from my monitor. Nope.

To recap, two differnt cameras, one card reader, three different SD cards: all fail to mount.

Hmmm . . .

it's just the very slightest movment & nearly undectablke click felt, did you use a pen or your finger?

If you disconnect say the Dell's USB, reboot & just use say the card reader, does thar work?

What does System Profiler?Hardware>USB say about USB devices?

Hi BD;

I used my finger on the PMU button and held it down for about a second or so.

Disconnected the Dell's USB, etc., as you suggested; nada.

The System Profiler lists the devices (e.g. Silicon Media R/W, Nikon DSC CoolPix, Flash Card Reader) but that's about it. Nothing in the Finder.

Thanks for your perserverence.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".

Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

Anything listed there other than the 2 shown in DU?

Whew, one more idea to see if maybe the OS is hosed somewhere...

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

Do they show there?

Hi Limnos;

Yes. it's great monitor with ports for different drives, including USB which work with my flash drives.

I have also plugged the card reader directly into the back of the computer to no avail.

The card reader also has multiple ports for other card formats, but I don't have any others to try.

I tried an old floppy disk reader with an USB connection on the monitor, keyboard and computer: nope.

With the exception of USB flash drives, the keyboard port doesn't work with either the card or floppy disk reader.

Thanks;

OK here is some more weirdness or clarity.

I was wondering whether there was a difference between older (2 years or so) cards and new cards.

I inserted an older card into the port on my monitor and lo and behold, it mounted. Then ejected and tried the other new cards. Nope. I then reinserted the first one and it did not mount.

Restarted the computer with the first one in the slot. It mounted. I ejected it and immediately reinserted it; it mounted again. Then I again tried the other new cards; again no go. I then. you guessed it, inserted the first one (that worked previously) and this time no go.

Repeated the restart with the old card in place; OK. The old cards worked, but the new ones didn't. Once again, the first one that worked, now won't mount.

Restarted with one of the newer cards in place. Nope.

Restarted w/o any card in slot. Inserted card A; it mounts. Inserted card B; it mounts. Inserted Cards C + D; neither mounts. Now inserted Cards A + B again; neither mounts.

So to recap . . .

Card A: 2gb SanDisk Ultra II (old) — mounts on and after start-up and re-insert but not after trying Cards C + D

Card B: 512mb Kingston (older) — mounts on and after start-up and re-insert but not after trying Cards C + D (I had forgotten about this one before.)

Card C: 4gb Lexar Platinum II (newer) — does not mount no how

Card D: 16gb Lexar Platinum II (newest) — does not mount no how

There seems to be a pattern here. Maybe there are card differences.
