Stop re-opening pages in Safari

Now that I have upgraded to Lion how do I stop Safari re-opening previous pages when it is launched? I know this will be a simple thing but I just can't work it out. I prefer Safari to open with a blank page. I now find myself having to close unwanted pages each time I launch Safari.

Thanks

When you select Restart... or Shut Down... from the Apple Menu you should see a dialog that asks you if you want to restore your windows after you log back in. As long as you have that checked you should get the functionality that you need. I don't think that has any effect on the setting in System Preferences that is discussed earlier in this thread.

I am experiencing a similar problem. I hope someone can help me with it: after I installed Lion, I quickly unchecked the "restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" box because I also found it annoying that Safari and other programs re-opened the old windows. However, this has not worked completely: Safari does not re-open old windows anymore but programs like MS Word for Mac 2011, Excel and preview still do. Is this a bug or is there another preference which has to be changed?

Thanks for you help in advance!

There seems to be no difinitive solution to this problem. This new feature has to be one of the most stupid, most annoying most pointless ideas there's ever been. And, ironically, the one place where you want a window to open automatically no longer works. When I plug in my iPhone, iTunes doesn't open automatically even though I have that check box is ticked.

Come on Apple, get rid of this feature, please!
