OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

I dont have a SSD upgrade, or a non relective, hi-res screen, just a bog-standard MacBook Pro running 10.7.1 and i still get the login freeze etc. so i think we can rule out SSD and fancy screens as the problem.

i find i can leave AGS on, and just use "auto login" and then i dont have the freezing problem. just avoid the login screen.

for security, you can password lock the screensaver.

hope for a fix soon, Apple??

Having the same problem as reported here. I do not see Automatic Graphics Switching as an option in Energy saver? Has been happening when computer is left idle but not on initial boot. My MBP is several years old and I have 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM installed. Original HD. I'm not seeing anything special about LION and wish I had come here first prior to installing.

Hi

I just called applecare and they seems fixed the problem (so far) doing the following:

1. shut down your mac

2. Press and hold LEFT option-control-shift keys and power button for 5 seconds (seems to do nothing) . -Reset System management controller.

3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys (you may wait to ear the start sound 2 times then release them). -Reset PRAM and NVRAM

4. now you will be able to pass trough login screen.

5. go to your finder: hold and press option key and you'll be able to see "library" in the GO menu.

6. go to caches and select and delete all files in there.

7. again go to your finder and go menu, select computer, select your mac folder then library then caches. delete all files on it.

8. empty your trash.

9. finally go to system preferences and delete all login items that run automatically.

That should work. If doesn't something wrong with your video card... at least is what they told me.

Hope this help.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately same as "Lord2013" I can confirm that after several reboots the annoying problem is back.

I tried everything, even reinstalled Lion but this problem remains and for me it is very disappointing and frustrating experience (my first MBP!). Called applecare 3 times and they told me twice that during the update process something went wrong or that this issue is caused by 3rd party software! After reinstalling Lion on a separate partition and having the same problem they finally believed me and forwarded the issue to the developping team. But so far nothing happened.

The only thing that really help is to disable AGS or rollback to Snow Leopard. I am still wondering why this takes so long to fix.

Ok, did all the resets and cache file deletes. Also, turned off Time Machine Backups for now - seemed to be running forever, took the password after wake-up off. First time wakeup after screen saver was successful - so far so good. Also, tried App Store and there is not issue there but I hadn't tried App Store since LION install. I'm also having issues with my WinTV-HVR 950Q - needs to be reset after boot-up for it to work but that's an issue for a separate topic.

Everyone:

We need to share our case #'s with each other. When we call Apple support, we need to share these numbers with the support staff. Also, when you call, please do everything you can to get sent to a "senior" support rep. Otherwise we're going to keep hearing these stories of people calling and being told that their hardware is faulty, which we've learned is completely false. This is a driver problem.

Here's my case #: 239467022

I'm currently not home but I received my laptop back from the AppleStore in which they told me the logic board replacement did not fix the problem and that it does appear to be a lion / mid 2010 Mbp issue. I called AppleCare national and spoke with a senior support and he told me that our engineers told us we might be receiving calls about your specific laptop running 10.6.8 or 10.7.1 freezing essessively. I ran a script they emailed to me and sent them the report. In the meantime, I need to go back to the applestore because after the logic board replacement, my LCD turns off and will not come back until you do a hard reboot. I'll post up my case number once I get home. Sorry if this makes no sense as I'm typing this on my iPhone.

Since updgrading (?!) to Lion both my iMAC (i7 21") and MBP have this problem. Sometimes after restarting the keyboard / mouse doesn't work and the machines needs a PRAM reset.

I did a 'dirty' upgrade on both machines to Lion (i.e. running the update installer from Snow Leopard), and then another upgrade to Lion server. As the server on the iMAC got corrupted (what is wrong with Apple QA these days) i bit the bullet and did a totally clean installation (reformatting disk etc). Guess what? Ha - you got it - the Log in Freeze still happens (the Server works sweetly now though 🙂). I also got a SSD upgrade for my MBP and did a clean installation on that drive/machine - the dreaded freeze still happens.

There has been much talk of graphics drivers and SSD's etc on this thread - all i can add is that if it happens on both MBP and iMAC, with and without SSD, on dirty / clean OSX installations etc that the issue is more fundamental to specific hardware builds and that the problem lies with the core of Lion.

Before Lion BOTH of these machines were rock solid - i cannot recall ever having one crash or lockup of the whole system. Indeed i used to be chuffed with my "up time" and the only restarts were after patches. Now, i am thinking this is significantly worse then anything i have had from M$ Windoze.

Incidentally, an in an attempt to identify a trend with the iussue, I wonder if having more than one account on the machine is a contributing factor - I have several user accounts and even remote directory for my kids to use the MBP when there is too much homework going on. Do all you also have multiple accounts or are your machines configured as single user devices?

Please Apple - get a fix...

I had a second conversation with a technician two days ago. They had no recommendations for a fix after reviewing everything that had been tried to date. They wanted me to bring in my computer and leave it for several days. After seeing that several folks have tried that with no luck, I think I will wait until people start reporting a successful fix before I turn over my MBP for days - only to have different or the same problems.

My case # is 241219360. Please feel free to mention my experience when you call Apple Care. I hope they start listening soon.
