OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

@bruleke

Exactly. You DIDN'T bring your laptop to Apple technicians and you DIDN'T contact Apple for support. Read through this thread. If you CONTACT them, they will take care of you. I'm in America, and Dave is in Europe- we were both taken care of far and above what we expected.

Fascist? That's a little hyperbolic. Just trying to inject some common sense into you.

Here's the reality- You have three choices:

1. Use Snow Leopard.

2. Turn off Automatic Graphics Switching.

3. Let Apple fix it for free.

I don't see what's so bad about option 3. Believe it or not, not everything can be fixed in software. I am all but convinced that this problem is one of those cases.

@mikeev: Mike - let's be balanced here. I am NOT taking Apple to task. (I've been an Apple fan and customer since 1984 and the 128K Mac). I am delighted that Apple has seen fit to help you out with this. But - to quote Dan Reed - "... (he) called AppleCare and was sent up to a "senior advisor" who said that this is NOT a known issue with this machine ..." (and the outcome of that is presumably still TBA). This tells me that there is no "general policy" yet in-place for handling this specific problem.

But clearly the problem exists, and IMHO, it would be helpful to pin it down to a specific hardware and software suite. Perhaps there is a less-costly "firmware" fix for it.

@ mikeev:

Ok, dear virtual friend, calm down tough guy.

I read all the thread and I also will make a suggestion: read the thread again. You will be surprised that I didnt write anything before. This is the first day I see this thread, the first day I know this issue. Can you give me some time to:

1. download Lion

2. Install it

3. Take to Apple retail store

Can you? Because I was just showing how frustraded I am after reading these bad news. Just that!

After installing Lion and IF I take to Apple retail store, I will personally send an email to you apologizing and showing some pics of my new logic board, my macbook, the Apple's printed order and maybe some pics of my dog playing with this toys - so you can calm down and relax.

Update:

Brought my machine to the Apple retail store here in the Twin CIties. THe Genius wiped my drive and installed a copy of Lion on my machine and replicated the problem multiple times. He said he hadn't heard of the issue and that the best he could do is escellate the issue (which is what AppleCare phone support said.). They will absolutely NOT replace the logic board on this machine until they hear back from Apple corporate engineers. They are going to call me on Monday or Tuesday with an update.

They are now at least aware of the issue. I'll keep you up to date when I find out what they are going to do for me.

@Terry to be hoenst, I was actually told that it was not a known issue as well. Whether this is true or not is somewhat irrelevant- you should still be able to get to the end result. My senior tech got in touch with the developers and he said "my developers have concluded that your logic board may be bad", and offered to have it sent in. I think that while the problem is serious, it's probably very limited. I believe this affects only those of use who bought this version of the MBP at launch or near launch, and I think they fixed the problem pretty early in its life cycle.

The worst that can happen is that the support rep will ask you to reinstall Lion fresh, and log what happens. That's what happened with me. It's a pain, but it's worth it.

@bruleke dude.. I'm the calm one. You're nuts dude. You read about an incompatiblity and without ever testing it yourself, you start ranting like mad. You might be okay- not ALL Mid-2010/6.2 MBP's have this problem. Give it a shot.

Dan Reed1:

Good idea!

Actually, let me ask MIKEEV to stop acting like a hysterical person and help us.

MIKEEV: can you post the case number here? THAT might help us... and not saying that we cant complain.

Once I had a problem with my macbook pro and the guys gave me the same answer they gave Dan: "we are not aware of this issue". They did nothing.

I had to take my macbook to another retail store, in ANOTHER STATE! Actually I was moving to another state, so I took the macbook with me. This second Apple retail store DID something.

Its crazy... its something like "luck"...

Seeing the latest posts, as I started this thread, I want to say:

This is a thread that was started because there is a problem, with the main purpose of finding a solution to that particular problem. Complaining can not be prohibited (of course) but those who only complain and do not come with any useful information must understand that their posts are not interesting (and can also be annoying), because complaining here simply does not help and makes people lose his time.

It is not a matter of being an "apple fan" or not; also Apple is not a religion (although somebody might think it is), nor your girlfriend/boyfriend, to whom you have been faithful for years. Apple is just a company that make hardware/software products, and since they are not Gods, they make mistakes. So, I think that when you find one of those mistakes, you should ask them to try to solve the problem. They probably will if they can. This is what you actually do (I hope) when your fridge is malfunctioning... What you cannot do, in my opinion, is to sit and complain without doing anything but expecting that a solution will present itself (or even better, the problem will disappear) just because you have a Mac!

Just to note that this is my first and also my last contribution to any offtopic discussion here. Good luck everybody!

Update: This afternoon, the Apple Certified Technician at my preferred local Mac retail store has (at least until proved otherwise) "killed" this bug, by changing a system configuration file (about which "... I do not need to know". At least not yet). 😀

The solution was discovered by observing that "the bug" disappeared, on my MBP6,2 when he booted it up using a "netboot". But it reappeared when he rebooted using the installed, "downloaded" copy of Lion. He changed the identified file on my MBP and it looks, so far, as if the bug has flown off. So, it appears that this is may not be a hardware issue after all.

The case (purely local service) is still open and I will be twisting Lion's tail this weekend. I'll let you know what happens when the case is "closed", expected to be early this coming week.

Oct 14, 2011 3:34 PM in response to Terry Mahoney

@bruleke: I am as sure as I can be, knowing these local Apple Certified Techs, that IF this is the correct solution, they will definitely post it to Apple - so that it can be used to correct the problem for future downloads and/or in the next Lion "patch" release. However, I will verify that this is the case.

In the meantime, we just want to be as sure as possible that this really is what is causing the problem. Give us a weekend - to see if the bug rears its ugly head again. I know, from frustrating experience, that trying to change .config files can be "hairy" unless you know exactly what to change, and what to change it to.

And thanks for your encouraging comment. Smiles. 🙂

Still getting the problem in 10.7.2. Joy. Thanks for so much Apple for ruining my MacBook and then refusing to acknowledge that there's even a problem. Thanks SO much. $3000 well spent, yep.

Anyway, I don't want to call support because I'm hearing impaired and imagine that conversation is going to be a frustrating one. But there are 3 Apple Stores near me. If I take it to the store, if I explain what's wrong with it, that the bug was introduced with Lion and that it means the logic board would need to be replaced, and I expect it done for free despite not being in AppleCare, are they going to laugh me out of the store?

I'm in New York by the way. I may take it in this Monday to avoid the weekend crowd and see what they say. Unless I'm dealing with savvy techs though they may not be willing to fix this for me on their dime. If not I may just dump this on eBay and get a Toshiba. 😝
