OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

Disabled Automatic Switching and everything back to normal on MacBook Pro Mid 2010. Need a patch for this.

I have issues similar to many in this discussion.

15'' Macbook Pro (Mid 2010), 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB DDR3 running OS X 10.7

Within 5 seconds of the login screen appearing, I get the "colored rotating disc" (aka "the spinning beach ball of death"), the text cursor stops blinking, and I cannot type in my password. The only way to get out of this is to hold down the power button.

This happened to me 4 times in a row until I tried turning the computer on with the power adapter unplugged and suddenly I had no problem logging in! After shutting down, I tried to turn the computer on with the power adapter plugged in and the login screen froze again.

The only way to get my computer past the login screen is to do it while running on battery power instead of the power adapter. Weird...

In my case it seems Parallels installation has something to do with it. I have updated Parallels and everything seems to work for now

I have the same problem.

If i don't enter my password at the loginscreen a few seconds after it appears my MacBook Pro hangs and I get the "Power off..."-Message after a short time.

I don't know how this can help us but my idea is to communicate what software we have installed (especially some that have daemons or are Preferences) and what hardware we have.

So I start.

Hardware:

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), 2.8 GHz Intel i7, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB SSD (original Apple)

Software:

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) which has the problem of locking up on the login screen with the beach ball.

I have found it only happens when connected to the power adapter, when on battery the problem is not there.

It seems to be a problem with the Automatic Graphic Switching.

When on battery the MBP boots up using the Intel HD Graphics and does not switch to the NVIDIA Graphics.

When connected to the power adapter the MBP boots up using the Intel HD Graphics and then switches to the NVIDIA.

It seems the switching takes place when the login screen is displayed.

Turning off Automatic Graphic Switching seems to fix this issue as it will only use the NVIDIA Graphics.

I have done three 7 Pass secure erase and installs of Lion, the same issue happens everytime.

I also have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) which does not have this problem. The big difference is it does not have the Automatic Graphic Switching feature.

Both are secure erase and installs of Lion, no other software installed.

The rumor is Lion 10.7.1 fixes this issue. When we will get it is another story. They already seeded 10.7.2 to developers.

I'm having the same issue. Lion freezes at login. The cursor does not move! Also, I just clean installed Lion, but the issue remains!

Please fix this Apple!!!! I'm quite disappointed.

MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Core i7, 4GB Ram, 128GB SSD, Nvidia Geforce 330M with auto-graphics switching

Im having the same issue on my Macbook Pro 2010 15 inch i7, 8 gigs ram.

10 out of 9 times i start up my macbook pro, it freezes at log in. This is getting old and fast, cause i hate having to foce the shut down on it. Guess i either wait it out for the fix or go back to SL.

I have a cleanly Lion installed (not an upgrade from Snow Leopard) Macbook Air from 2010, and I don't have the option of disabling AGS. I've enabled full disk encryption, otherwise it's all Apple, Omnigroup software and Sophos AV on it. I get hangs when I log in after hibernation. It will just sit there after I type in the password.

Those of you with all the freezes, my friend had the same. He removed the SSD and replace with factory HD, and all is ok now.

I think that it is the issue at hand. I would wait for the newer SSD's with some of the newer tech, which I feel Apple has already implemented in the OS, like TRIM.

Basically, back to factory specs for testing is what we do.

I had AGS disabled, but I was still having freezes.

So I decided to format my MB again.

After that format I noticed that AGS was disabled (what made me think that although we enable or disable it inside the OS it flags something in the 'BIOS' equivalent of the mac.

Anyways, after this format and having always the AGS disable I didn`t have any freezes.

I also have to say that I didn`t install the Tuxera NTFS driver yet. It seemed to me that I had two kinds of freezes.. the one in login screen (specially when returning from screen savers) and freezes related lots of data being copied.

So I have a MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2010) and got the same freez problem at the login screen. Good to know that there are more with the same problem ... this have to be fixed by apple.

Have the same issue with Mid 2010 MBP (8GB, 500GB). I have no SSD, so it has nothing to do with it. I have tried disabling AGS and it still freezes from time to time. It seems to work well for a while and the suddenly starts freezing again (even two or three times in a row) It's pretty annoying and I think this should have been taken off during beta testing. I'm thinking about going back to Snow Leopard, at least untill Lion is more stable, since i use my computer to work, and if I could stand an unstable system I would have gone Windows already... they've been doing it for years and they're better at it :-P

I have the same problem. Macbook Pro purchased in February 2011. I called Apple support and they were not helpful - they just had me restart the computer a few times....My problems with the hang was starting the computer from a full off-position @ the login screen. And this only happened every second time I started my computer. The hard reset ceased working yesterday which is why I called Apple Support.

I will try the "Disable Automatic Switching" advice....now I have to figure out why my screen doesn't come out of sleep mode all the time.

The sad truth is Windows 7 runs better on my Mac then Lion does!

I am having the same problem with my MBP 15" Core i5 2.4 Ghz. It locks up at login every 3-4 booth and I get the spinning beach ball. Judging by this thread, it is pretty common and hopefully Aple will issue a patch soon. I have a 11" MBA that does not have that problem by the way.
