Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

I have a macbook pro 2011, i7, 8Gb ram, and I can't switch off or restart without using the power button. The only way it works normally is after starting computer (using power button) I restart before open any appilcation... in other case goes to white screen with spinning simble.

I found a permanent solution to be to disable (uncheck) the "Automatic graphics switching" in the "Energy Saver" section of System Preferences.

Prior to disabling AGS, my system would not turn on without a lockup and ever since doing that I have not gotten a single system freeze, lock up...nothing. From reading this it seems like this is not a solution for everyone but if you have not tried this yet I would definitely recommend it!

Everyone: if you see this problem wtih your mid-2010 Macbook pro, PLEASE call Apple Tech support. As others have stated, it's free as a new Lion user. Also, if your tier-1 rep cannot solve the problem (and they won't, since it's a problem with Lion and our mid-2010 Macbook Pro hardware), ask to speak to a senior-level technicians. The senior techs will give you their work contact info (e-mail and phone) and you can keep up with them.

If you can, please do the following before calling:

    0. Record everything you do from this point on.

    1. Test on a clean install of Lion.

    2. Boot 5-10 times, record what happens (login freezing, etc.)

    3. Repeat on Snow Leopard.

During the call, share this information. Also mention this thread and the many others. Usually the senior level techs will listen to you if they think you're relatively technically competent. Also, ask them to please test Lion on their own on a MID-2010 Macbook Pro (has to be that exact model) with AGS turned on, and ask them if they're able to repeat the issues. They got to have some laying around the office somewhere...

I've done all of these things, and I'm confident that we have 1 senior tech in our camp. Unfortunately, I think it'll take more to escallate the issue. The sooner we all do this the sooner Apple's engineers will get to solving this serious problem.

I had a call with a German senior tech yesterday.

He confirmed that this is a forum from users for users. They only provide the platform, but the forum is not getting monitored by tech specialists.

I did a clean install and forwarded some crash logs, which he put together in a case and forwarded it to the developers. I think it would be a good idea if some more technically experienced users would call the above mentioned hotline of your country to get some more attention on this problem.

The senior tech mentioned that he has no problem with his own Mid 2010 MBP and Lion. Maybe it would be a good idea to share the hardwareconfig of the systems which have a problem, as it seems to be a problem of some HW configurations only.

Mac freezing, on the latest OS X?? this is bull ****.. Also slow response on sensing cursor location. I'm having to click twice on hyperlinks. I'm finding myself using Windows 7 which i have installed on Boot Camp and this is shameful. Don't get me wrong, windows 7 runs perfectly on my Imac but its a shame its running better on an imac than the supposedly notorious OS Lion.

I relatively new to my MBPro and up until now have loved every bit of being converted to the world of 'Mac'

despite the cost being high. You get what you pay for as my Ma used to say!

I've now had this problem on my Sept 2010 15" MBPro having just upgraded to Lion.

I'm not really technical enough to understand clean installs and but I have disabled the AGS in hope.

I just upgraded Lion from the Apps Store and followed my orders from Apple.

You know sad thing is that everyone has always said to me.."When to get a Mac.. it just works"

I can't believe there are over 10 pages of this tail of woe..

No come on Apple.. I'm in love with my little 15" baby.. Help me to love you even more too !!!

PLEASE COOK UP A PATCH !

Same issues as reported in this forum, MBP 15 inch, 2.53 Ghz i5, 4 GB ram,  !

I can't belive there isn't a special patch coming out for this problem, will give apple another month to sort this mess out, else I am switching back to snow leopard.

I switched back to Snow Leopard two weeks ago.  The fact of the matter is, when you boot up a PC and cannot get past the login screen because the OS is freezing/locking up, and when it does load up it's completely unusable, it's a piece of trash.  I loved Lion and all it's new features but it's worthless until Apple can figure out what is causing this awful problem.  Until then, this OS that I purchased will not be touching anymore of my MacBook Pro.

I'm having the freezing issue on a MBPro with optional HIGH RESOLUTION screen (namely 1680 x 1050 pixels).

What about you guys? Could this be related?

    Other configurations are similar  (15", mid 2010, i5, 2.4 GHz, 4GB)

I have been having the same issues with my Late 2010 Mac Mini as welll.  However my Late 2007 MBP works just fine with no issues whatsoever (not that I log out of it, just put it to sleep and unlock the screen).

Not really happy with this.  Hopefully 10.7.2 resolves these issues.

Might be a stupid suggestion, if the laptop is going to be in your hands all the time.. Then turn off the AGS as suggested, and disable the password for log in, just let it log in without a log in screen..

    Dev,

Yes I guess so... My Mac is only used by me... I think the thing is that it's not really doing what it says on the tin and Apple really should fix it.

But good point. I have disabled the AGS thingy and since then its been fine although the battery life is reduced.

    Cheers

    Dave

According to all that I have read and researched the problem seems to be a faulty Nvidia driver that was shipped with OSX Lion.  The driver seems to have the kernal go into freak mode which causes all these lock ups.  Until it's fixed, I wont be upgrading again.

Again might sound silly, get your bightness levels n back light keyboard  to 1 or 2. This will greatly increase ur battery life,

    Cheers
