Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

@jmacbookpro: The hidden problem with this is that we have no simple way of discovering, for sure, whether or not we have a "hardware problem" that cannot be fixed by a software update or a firmware patch. I hope that Apple can definitively identify the hardware/motherboards/graphic-boards that really need to be recalled.

However, it is hopeful that ". . . while the technician was working with my computer, they have received a notification about a new quality program for this same issue".

I'll be watching for the expected bulletin - bearing in mind that my own MBP6,2 seems to have been fixed (but maybe not?) by the recent video software patch.

The MacbookPro Video Update has fixed my issue with freezing at the login screen (at least it hasn't happened today).

My comments on "not waiting for a software fix" were in the positive mood of having a solution for the problem. I meant no offense to those who expect a software fix. At the end, I really do not care if the problem is hardware or software. Engineers at Apple must care. For me, if the problem is solved, that's all I need.

About the video update... some report that it works, some report that it do not work. Maybe we are talking about similar but different issues? The update did not work in my case; not surprising if my computer is affected by the Quality Program I mentioned. But those who have already solved the issue with the software update may simply not be affected by the Quality Program.... I do not know which machines are affected or not; mine is. You just have to wait for official news from Apple.

I just downloaded the lion version of onyx and used it to clean out

the system caches, then re-enabled ags, booted back into lion

    – but the spinning beachball re-appeared at login.

btw when I checked my Snow Leopard volume all the

apps indicated in system info were 64 bit "yes"

    – so that means I'm running Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode

    successfully.

I'm still sceptical about this being a hardware problem

    – it seems more like an incompatibility problem

in the Lion OS or it's graphic driver component.

I also don't understand why the labs in Cupertino

    haven't been more forthcoming.

Can anyone in nVidia shed any light on this issue?

    – After all, nVidia showcased these laptops on their website

in 2010, so someone at nVidia must be encountering the same

problems with Lion – they owe it to us who bought their technology

    to 'fess up

@LincolnAdams, @chrisby10, @bruleke et al.: I've just had another "Lion 10.7.2 freeze on Login" so, for the record, the video software update did not work after all. My remaining option is to take this MBP6,2, NVIDIA GE 330M Revision ID: 0x00a2, ROM Revision: 3560, gMux Version: 1.9.21. back to my Apple Retailer (again) for hardware troubleshooting. (Fortunately, my local Mac specialist is following this Lion situation with interest)

I'm a little bit worried now - because of others on this thread who have reported  that their motherboard was replaced but that has still not fixed the SBBoD problem. I will keep the thread up to date about what happens.

    Intresting!

So we have people like @terry mahoney that have motherboard replacement and still not a fix.

I have the same opinion like @Metalizer that it can't be a hardware problem. Why is snow leopard working perfect and lion making problems!?

well i have to say that after having installed Lion again and run the video update my MBP mid 2010 with the Nvidia card

Chipset Model:          NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

      Type:          GPU

      Bus:          PCIe

      PCIe Lane Width:          x16

      VRAM (Total):          256 MB

      Vendor:          NVIDIA (0x10de)

      Device ID:          0x0a29

      Revision ID:          0x00a2

      ROM Revision:          3560

      gMux Version:          1.9.21

      Displays:

    Color LCD:

      Resolution:          1440 x 900

      Pixel Depth:          32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)

      Main Display:          Yes

      Mirror:          Off

      Online:          Yes

      Built-In:          Yes

is working as good as it does with SL; my issue was not with the log in, it was with random freezing, it did not matter what i was working on; also when I intsalled Lion for the first time the heat was insane now it is all cool

hope all your problems with Lion get solved ASAP

    Hi there!

I've been experiencing the same problem since Lion came out with my MacBook Pro mid-2010 (Nvidia 330M, same revision). I have followed this discussion for the last 3/4 months, hoping that the "Lion freeze at login" would have been solved quickly with a software update... I was wrong...

By the way, I'd like to thank all of you for your efforts by asking directly to Apple Support in order to find a solution: it really makes me feel I am not alone (as I am a brand new Mac OS X user, I immediately thought: "Oh my God! What I'm going to do now?"). So, again, thank you all!

On my side, I bought my MacBook in Italy but now I'm studying in Paris so, for those living here as well, the best solution is to bring our machine to the Carousel du Louvre or Opera: since I really need my MB at this very moment, I will wait 'till next month to ask for a hardware replacement.

    I'll post some news ASAP.

@hkoci: Whoa! One small clarification - I have not yet had any hardware changes to my MBP6,2.

But that may change. I took it in to my Apple Specialist retailer this morning, along with printouts of 2 relevant posts from this thread from (jMacBookPro and chrisby10). And I was able to demonstrate the SBBoD in the store - although not consistently - it took two attempts before it froze on login to Lion, with AGS ON, and waiting for a bit before starting to type the login password.

In an earlier post, I said that I am now worried by other reports of "motherboard replacements" that have not fixed the SBBoD on login to Lion. jMacBookPro reported:

"To everyone's interest: my MacBook Pro logic board was finally replaced two days ago, and the problem was still there . So, I have been back to the Genius Bar today (again...) with my repaired-but-not-properly-working Mac. Just while the technician was working with my computer, they have received a notification about a new quality program for this same issue."

I am hoping that the rumored "Quality Program" will cover my MBP6,2, because it looks like there is no guarantee that a logic-board replacement will fix the problem. I have done all the recommended Software Updates, including the video one. The video one temporarily seemed to get rid of the SBBoD, but it returned a few days later.

    Hi everybody,

I have been following this thread and having this same issue for 2 month now!

Finally I got my Logic Board replaced.

Here a neverending story in a few lines:

    - Crashes after Upgrade to 10.7.

    - Clean Install -> did not help

    - Changing the RAM -> did not help

    - Changing the HDD -> did not help

    - clean install -> did not help

    - OPENING a senior tech call

    - dumping logs and system info to send it to development

    - feedback to bring it to a local service provider for diagnostics

    - Tests for 5 hours at the local service store -> did not find any problems with my hardware

    - left it there over night -> NO ERRORS

    - 2 days later 5 crashes in a row -> Partition unreadable and impossible to repair.

    - apple support allowed a logic board replacement

    - clean install -> NO PROBLEMS FOR 3 days

I do not have installed the video update so far, so if anybody could recomend a goot performance testing tool I would be able to proof the downclocking rumors and post the testresults before and after the video update.

AGAIN IN MY CASE IT WAS A HARDWARE ISSUE related to the logic board.

BTW my Case ID is/was 242514799 if that helps s.o. else.

    @Lord2013: try this: http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/

Its not a professional tool, but may help. Of course it wont work if you do a test with a 'clean' mac and another test with your mac loaded with apps. ehehe Just to clarify! Anyway, thanks for helping us!

I am following this topic too. Also, following Apple support page for macbook pro and there's nothing until this moment about the quality program. Lets hope for the best.

    I think the same thing.

I have an iMac (27-inch Late 2009 i7) and I have the same problem since I updated to version 10.7.2.

    It's not an hardware problem.

In particular, my problem is not a freeze (mouse and keyboard work properly), but when I select my user, I don't see the password field.

Also click on shut down or restart, nothing happens (if I click on stop, the Mac goes to sleep properly).

The only solution is turn off the Mac.

I have to say, I am impressed.

I called to find out if the update was supposed to fix the macbook pro login freeze.   The senior tech contacted engineering and told me it should have.  I was requested to send in my computer free of charge.  They sent me a box thursday, replaced the motherboard on Friday, computer was back at my house today.

I no longer have the login beach balls.  I think I am done looking at this forum.  I have no idea if there should be a software fix for this, but the hardware fix definitely worked for me.

@chrisby10: Hey! Before you leave us

Just to confirm: your solution was the replacement of the logic board, right? And you have a mid-2010 macbook pro with Nvidia 330m, right?

    Thanks a lot!

I did some tests before and after installing the Video Upgrade today.

It looks like there is no performance difference after having installed the fix.

Here is a screenshot of one of the tools I ran. The two testresults(before orange, after brown) are avaerage for a MacBook PRO  of our Version.
    .Bildschirmfoto 2011-10-29 um 19.11.36.png

I put the details of several different tools I found free on the web in a pdf you can look at here: http://www.gerhager.de/Bechnmark_Results.pdf

AGAIN: I triet to fix this issue for 2 month by different software attempts. It is a hardware issue. And the reason why it only shows up in Lion is in my opinion the new OpenCL implementation in Lion.

Changing the LogicBoard fixed the issue completly for my Mid 2010 MBP 15". So go get a logic board replacement and refere on this thread or some case IDs in this thread.
