Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

Sorry for the noob question but I still cannot edit the info.plist file as OSX still complains I dont have permission. I have tried textwrangler but whatever permission I set if refuses to let me save the file. Coming from Windows 7 this is incredibly frustrating anyone help?

    Hi gr4z,

Try first to open Disk Utility and run a Repair Permission on your disk.

In the Finder, if you do a Get Info (Command-i) on the kext, what do you see under Sharing and Permissions section?

Reset all permissions. info.plist file is R/W for System and Read only for everyone and wheel. If I change it to R/W for everyone and edit the file. When I save the file it states:

You do not have sufficient privileges to perform this operation (MacOS Error code: -5000)

    ??

Since I didn't applied the combo update, I didn't had to reapply the fix for 10.7.2, because the 10.7.3 update doesn't make any change to AGPM.kext

If you did apply the 10.7.3 combo update, I think you do have to reapply the fix because the combo update has all the modifications since 10.7.0, and I think there were modifications to AGPM.kext on 10.7.1 update.

Other than that, no problem at all. If you did update to 10.7.3 and you are still having SBOD then check your AGPM.kext Info.plist and see if the fix is still there (if not try to reapply and see if it solves).

    @gr4z

I think you should not change system file permissions using the finder.

Just use TextWrangler to open info.plist, eventually unlock the file using the pencil icon, modify it and then choose File - save.

Then reboot in safe mode (holding shift key).

If you have problems restoring the right permissions on the kext, open the terminal app and type:

    sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext

    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext

OK I have run the two chmod commands.

Re-open in TextWrangler and click on the pencil to unlock. Make changes and the CMD-S to save and...

You do not have sufficient privileges to perform this operation (MacOS Error code: -5000)

I am pulling my hair out

Look in Accounts preferences, "Allow user to administer this computer" is enabled?

    This is really strange...

Have you tried to enable and login as root user?!

I have done a safe boot as you suggested in order to complete a kind of process. again no more spinning ball . Let's cross the finger.

    So i did.

clean install, update from the clean install to 10.7.3 and now also a safe boot.

Re. Safe Boot: Thanks for letting us know. It is important to know if that gets rid of the login-SBBoD (at least for a week or a month )

gr4z: I agree with Paceymac - this is "very strange". Because you are logged in as an Administrator, you should not need to login as "root". Especially if you are not completely sure of what you need to do, since - if you login as "root" - it is not hard to make your Mac "useless" if you make a mistake.

I am wondering exactly what your hardware-software configuration is? I assume you are running Lion 10.7.3 on a recent MacBook Pro, that you upgraded from Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Your Apple discussions "Profile" shows your Products as "Dell, IOS 4". Can you perhaps update this, if appropriate?

Sorry I need to update my profile, to confirm I have:

    MBP 15" mid-2010

Lion clean installed a few weeks ago, confirmed latest version 10.7.3

My user is definitely an Administrator.

I really don't understand what's wrong - as I work in IT I thought I would be able to work this out but this has stumped

gr4z: I am also "stumped" for the moment. You ought to be able to do this. I'll ponder the problem for a bit and see if something else occurs to me. (I'm 9 time zones behind you. ).

It sounds as if you somehow have messed up the usual Administrator priviliges that your account should have.

In the meantime, why not try setting up another "Admin" account and checking whether this solves the Textwrangler "file access" problem?
