Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

I just installed 10.7.1 and turned on the auto graphics switching.  I shut my Spring 2010 15" MBP six times and no lock ups or beach balls at start up so far.  I did the restarts with and without the automatic windows reopening and I even waited about 30 minutes for one of the restarts to give the MBP a chance to cool down.  I'll keep you guys posted if I get a lock up i  the next few days.

Not sure what you meant by "30 minutes for one of the restarts to give the MBP a chance to cool down", but have you done this?

    1. MBP is off.

    2. Turn on MBP.

    3. DON'T TOUCH IT.

    4. Let it SIT at the Login screen for at least a few minutes.

I always, without fail, get a freeze at the login screen when I do this. If I have the MBP in my lap at startup and I start moving the mouse immediately, then it's fine. I log in normally, and it seems to be more or less stable. I think this is because if you let it sit at the login screen then it switches to a low power state and there is currently some sort of corner case bug that they didn't test for in this instance.

TL;DR: 10.7.1 is still broken with my mid-2010 MBP

I just followed your instructions and left it for 5 minutes, I didn't even touch the track pad and I still didn't get a freeze.  I hope that this is it for me.  It does seem that people had this problem in different degrees, ranging form locking up every three or four boot up to locking up almost every time.  I was locking up every three or four boot up before I turned off the AGS and that stopped it then.

Glad to hear that it's working for you. I'm curious- What version of the firmware do you have on your MBP? I *think* that's what the "SMC" is when you look at your MBP's system details. Mine is:

    SMC Version (system):          1.58f16

Just installed and rebooted MBP with 10.7.1.  Still the exact same problem.

    Thanks for absolutely NOTHING Apple.

I have the same issue here on my mid-2010 MBP 15" (2.66GHz i7). Either clean installation or upgrading from snow leopard doesn't keep me out of this problem.

    Same issues.

My work around is to uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in"

Hasn't locked up when doing this step.

Diabling the automatic graphic switching aslo works as a temporary workaround for me.

But I would love to use my battery at its full!

I found one workaroud is to enable automatic login.  It goes right into the desktop fast enough before any potential freeze can occur, and I can keep automatic graphic switching enabled.

Effing ridiculous that I need to do this.  Apple really gave us the finger on this, didn't they?

Having the same issue too, but I don't have a newer Mac Book Pro - mines an early 2008 model so I don't have the Graphics Switching option.  10.7.1 didn't solve it for me. Looks like I'll be reverting back to SL until this is fixed.

This is absolutely and unspeakably ridiculous. I have this same problem but the solution for me is to turn down my backlight on my keyboard. Literally helps me log in every time it happens. Why in the world would the login screen have anything at all to do with the keyboard backlight.

Well, I thought I was OK with version 10.7.1, and I had turned the AGS back on for the last few days, but I did get a beach ball lock up this morning on the log in screen.  I turned AGS off and I hope this will solve it as it did before.  By the way, 10.7.1 was suppose to solve the wi-fi issues, but my wi-fi still dies once in a while when coming back from sleep... but I digress, this one is for another thread.
