Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

Just created a new Admin account and still the same error which must mean I am doing somthing wrong! I am just navigating to the info.plist file and editing it. Click on pencil to unlock it. But the same issue

gr4z: This may be the answer to your Textwrangler problem ... it seems that you need to download the free version from BareBones' website. The one from the App Store does not set the necessary file-permissions to modify "System" files.

Just to add my experiences to the rest - I did a clean install of 10.7.3; erase HDD, install 10.7.3 from a USB memory stick, software updated iTunes and Airport Utility, second reboot caused the SBBoD.

Gone back to SL disk image now as the SBBoD is not fixed in 10.7.3.

Ah ha this fixed it. I had downloaded TextWrangler from the App Store. Tried this one instead and worked straight away. I will put the straight jacket away and lock the padded room.

    Thanks for your help!

Maybe there are some graphics card revisions that work with 10.7.3, and others not.

I had to reapply the kext fix in 10.7.3, and my hardware is the following:

    MacBookPro6,2

Processor  2,4 GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B0C

    SMC Version (system): 1.58f16

Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 288 MB

    Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

    Device ID: 0x0046

    Revision ID: 0x0012

    gMux Version: 1.9.21

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M:

    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

    Device ID: 0x0a29

    Revision ID: 0x00a2

    ROM Revision: 3560

    gMux Version: 1.9.21

May I ask you if you have the same NVIDIA Revision ID?

    Thank you

just to say SBBoD is sometimes again there .better than before but is there .

I am waiting an answer from the apple senior support who asked me to run a software sent by mail on my mac and to send it back to him

    Lets wait

gaalad1: Have you yet tried the "kext-fix", file modification that worked for Paceymac and myself (and others)? We both had (or have) recent MBP6,2 Macs (mine has gone to a new home), and this particular fix worked for us - it permanently got rid of the Lion 10.7.2 login SBBoD.

If your MBP's GPU specs match the ones that Paceymac gives (above) then I think the fix is worth a try. Another workaround is to disable Automatic Graphics Switching in your System Preferences > Energy Saver ... panel - but this is just a kludge, not a "fix".

It also looks as though the "kext-fix" continues to work after installing 10.7.3 "over" 10.7.x (although not if you do a clean install). The problem seems to be that the clean-install overwrites the "good", old AGPU/Contents/info.plist file with a new one that (still) has invalid parameters in it for the MBP6,2.

Thanks for your advice .I have the same Mac as Paceymac

In the last period  ( since September) I have disabled the automatic graphic  switching .

Moreover I had a genius bar appointment where was done a lion clean install with no effect

I have carefully read your fix. However I am a bit reluctant due to my few experience with Mac os and textwrangler.

Before Mac I was using Linux .

I have also red your comment on SDG Consultant .

At the moment the problem is there once every ten boot.

If you have any advice to use properly textwrangler are most welcome.

Your story is similar to mine, as I wrote in a previous post on page 38.

"At the Genius bar they tried to do a clean Lion install with a new hard disk and new ram, but the problem was still there (10.7.2 + video update). They also run a specific test for the Apple article TS4088, but my MBP passed it: so no free logic board replacement..."

To fix the kext, open the Finder and go to /System/Library/Extensions, locate AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext, control-clic and choose show package content, control-clic on info.plist and choose open with TextWrangler.

Click on the pencil icon to unlock, command-f and type "MacBookPro6,2".

Then under the Euristic section change the numbers as shown on page 47 in the Andrew Tallon post, or in SDG Consultant on page 45.

    Choose file - save

Click on the pencil icon and exit.

Reboot in safe mode (hold shift key).

Paceymac and gaalad1: (Great post). It might be a good idea to also point out that Lion's version of the /System/... AGPU/Contents/info.plist for the MacBookPro6.2 (as you know, there are different sets of parameters - in the same info.plist file -  for the various Mac models) has one extra parameter - P3HistoryLength - that is absent from the Snow Leopard version. This parameter needs to be completely deleted if it is present.

Re. using TextWrangler: I've recently (accidentally) discovered that I can open the info.plist file(s) using Xcode (either version 3.x or 4.x). So I can probably also edit them that way but I haven't tried it yet. It looks like it might be easier (or harder to mess up) to do than using TextWrangler - if one is familiar with using Xcode.

It might be useful if we could post a copy of the 10.6.8 info.plist file on the thread - but I'm not sure whether this would violate Apple's licencing agreements. IMO, Apple's software engineers have a solution staring them in the face but they are diddling with it.

Yes, so just confirming: The 10.7.3 combo update did overwrite the fix I applied in 10.7.2 and it needs to be reapplied as I am back to spinning beachball.
