Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

Not_So: IMO - sticking with SL for now is a "good move".

But if the worst happens, you can always just take the written instructions for our "kext fix" (for MBP6,2's only) to an Apple Certified Technician and direct her/him to "do it". It's not hard if you understand what to do, and shouldn't take more than a half-hour.

Terry - Thanks!  I did apply the kext fix for 10.7.2 - and it did work.  However, I'm going to stick to my guns until a month or so before MobileMe expires.  I had a number of lengthy phone calls with an Apple senior tech when I clean installed 10.7.2 a few months ago, found the SBBoD and found this thread which resulted in me sending a sys dump to them and the conclusion it was a Lion isssue (SL graphics switching is fine as we know), Apple were aware and are working on it.  I also sent them the URL for this thread too.

Not_So: Kudos! - Both for applying the "kext fix" and for getting the information to Apple, and being reasonably confident that they know about it and are working on it. That definitely puts a different spin/complexion on our status quo.

It looks like they could improve their PR, though, instead of just leaving their user-community dangling, and wondering if the "busted branch" is going to snap off.

galaad1: (Re. EFI firmware update fixing the issue) I think not. According to this "marketing description",

         http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/

the "MacBook Pro EFI firmware update 2.6" has absolutely nothing to do with the Lion "login-freeze" problem this thread is focused on.

    I have a 15" macbook pro mid 2010.

Since my update to Lion I have the "freezegate"

I have about five seconds to type my password - otherwise it freezes, I get a beachball ......

Patching the "AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext" solved my problem.

    Thank you Terry!

    The 10.7.3 update doesn`t change the kext-file.

After the Update the patched file was still in place.

Just for fun I went back to the original kext-file,

and - " freezegate" was back again!

So Apple - thank you for nothing!!

    Sweet Jesus,

the same problem here. I've a mac mini late 2009.

I updated 10.6.8 to 10.7, so the problems started.

the same with 10.7.1, 10.7.2 and now even again with 10.7.3.

Now the last change is to update the kernel extension as suggested for macbook pro, that is substitute the values of 10.7.x with the ones of 10.6.8.

Let's hope this will fix it, I'm terribly upset about this.

I bought a Mac to have stability/easy of use. If this is the result...

Terry - I phoned Apple again last night to resurrect my previous case number relating to this issue.  I only spoke to the initial level tech who was very helpful and was suprised that this was still occuring with 10.7.3.  There was a lengthy delay to talk to the senior level techs I was advised to call back at another time.  I shall endevour to do so  this weekend and if there are any further developments I will report back!

Hi all--I can confirm that the 10.7.3 update DOES overwrite the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext -- I got the SBBoD right away after the update. So I'm off to patch once again...

Hi Watzman: Thanks. And it's useful to have your confirmation. (Denials are also useful when they raise questions that can be tested. If a "fix" works we should let the community know. Otherwise we should either bury it, or figure out the limited circumstances where it works or not).

Hi Andrew: Did you do a "clean install"? (Meaning "Erase the drive and then reinstall Lion" and also do a "safe boot" - to flush the kext cache, etc.). Or did you download and install over an existing 10.7.2 partition?

As we currently understand it, a "clean install" will "replace/overwrite" the old info.plist(s) files, and flushing the caches will insure that MacOS X is forced to spend (extra) time (on Boot-up) reading the (new-or-old) info.plist(s) for stuff that is not in the cache(s)

Not_So: Great! Keep us posted. It is useful for all of us to know what is happening on the Apple Technical Support end.

maulattu: Can you boot-up from your original DVD MacMini installation disks? I know it is a huge hassle to have to reinstall your Mac OS X, and then probably bring it up-to-date (onto another HD - possibly external - or partition) and then use Migration Assistant to migrate all your Apps and files from your backup - hopefully you have one - to the new HD).

If possible, run Time Machine to get an up-to-date snapshot of your system before proceeding further.

Which MacMini do you have? According to Everymac.com, the late-2009 ones were available with 3 CPU options: 2.26, 2.53 and 2.66 Core 2 Duos.

Hi again, maulattu and anyone else who is interested in Lion glitches on the Macmini: I just took a look at the AGPU kext info.plist(s) files for differences between Lion and Snow Leopard for (Macmini3,1; Macmini4,1; and Xserve3,1), and they seem to be identical. So my current thought is that the AGPU kext info.plist is not the source of the problem for the Macminis. We need to look elsewhere.

Does anyone else on the thread have any ideas?
