Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

hi,I've the 2.53 GHz CPU. now i just did what suggested by user "Metalizer" in this discussion in november (use the emergency console+reset password in order to reset the acl. Now the system started up,now I'll do a cache clean with onyx + disable screen sharing with vnc again, thank you for the check you did abou the agpu ketx file. next step is to try to do a fresh lion .3 installation,I hope it will definely fix it ;)

maulattu: Good thinking. Keep us posted. I think we've eliminated the kext-fix for the Macmini, so try another aapproach.

To quote the immortal Sherlock Holmes: “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” (AKA Arthur Conan Doyle Sr.).

We just need to find it.

Hi Terry--I had 10.7.2 and used the combo updater to move to 10.7.3. After I verified that the kext file was indeed modified (sbbod on login) I edited the kext file with 10.6.8 values, rebooted in safe mode, then rebooted once again and all is well.

Andrew: OK - thanks. I'm now a bit confused about which specific Lion Update will replace the existing AGPU kext info.plist and which (other) Lion Update will leave it untouched.

    Any comments?

It's the Lion 10.7.3 Combo update that replaces the existing AGPU kext. As Andrew says, reapply the patch and all is fine again :-)

I've had the freezing lion for months a few minutes after startup then after considerable fan noise it seemed to right itself

Now I find the poblem has been completely fixed with the os x 10.7.3 upgrade

    hope it works for all

    cheers

Hi, I just bought a Mac Mini, the basic model, Updated to the 10.7.3 and I am having this issue. Isaw you talking about replacing the kext, do I need to do that too? Mine is a clean install, just bought, unbox it and updated and I am having this freezing when I try fast switching or just to log in...

    Terry Mahoney and others -

Does any one know what post has the details on what to change in the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext\Contents\info.plist file?

I had originally just deleted the kext.

Yesterday I applied 10.7.3 via software update and AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext is back (in system\library\extensions)

It looks like others had good luck just changing the plist so I thought I would try that this time.

unfortunately, this thread now has nearly 800 replies!!!

If anyone has a link to the instructions on what to change, that would be great. I no longer have a pre-lion copy to compare to...

      Thanks!

       - Jack

Gabriela, the kext fix definitely works for the MacBook Pro mid 2010. I'm not sure if has been verifed as fixing any other hardware but you can try it... See the link I have just posted above.

Gabriela: I see no point in modiying the  ... AGPU.kext/Contents/info.plist (using TextWrangler or XCode). I compared the Lion and Snow leopard versions yesterday (specifically for the Macminis - not the MacBookPros) and the Macmini parts of the two info.plists look identical.

However, I would still try SDG Consultant's original suggestion: move the entire /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext/ ... file temporarily to the trash (but don't empty the trash!). THen do a "Safe Boot" (this flushes caches, etc., forcing MacOS X to rebuild them at the next StartUp). Then do a shut-down and a normal StartUp. This should generate a "new" set of caches, and if the problem is gone it should be safe to move the kext file back into place.

If that doesn't work I would probably revert to using Snow Leopard, for now.

@Terry. I will try that, but I cannot go back to Snow Leopard, I do not have it. My Mac Mini came with Lion. Didn't Apple pronunciated about that?

Gabriela: Oooops! Sorry - I assumed you had bought a used one and done the update from Snow Leopard.

Ok - it's worth a try. But if I were in your shoes, I would probably go back to the store and ask them to make it work!

And - if they can't make it work as it should - ask them to install Snow Leopard into a second partition on the Hard Drive (it will be easier for them to do it than for you, if you do not have SL at least installed on another machine). That will enable you to use the Machine until Apple finally figures out which way is "up".

Tomorrow I will call apple Support, I have 7 days to switch my mac mini by law here in Brazil. But I bought it online, and the store is wondeful until you got a problem...

I will do some tests... see if anyone in the local foruns has this problem...
