Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

 

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

 

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

 

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

 

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

 

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

    At least the Mountain Lion thing is good news... but is it fair for users who are having this problem to wait for the next release of OS X? That question is up to debate.

    I am all in for making Apple aware of this issue and we must use all means neccesary to do so. I will test Mountain Lion tonight and report my findings by tomorrow evening.

    I Spoke to the Apple fewe minuts ago, and they will launch one firmware update soon, when i have news about that i will give you!

     

    But it's not fair at least for us that we have this problem apple shoud offer, at least, the new OS X.

    What i did see is the blackscreens that everybody is saying here! mine just freeze in the login and some times when using the system.

    How did you speak to Apple? Customer suppor? Retail stores? Apple Care?

     

    I am surprised they said they're releasing something. They don't usually give out such information.

    I speak to Irland, Apple Operations Europe, I send and e-mail and they contact me!

    Because my warranty problem, i stay with them contact, and i send and e-mail and they contacted me!

     

    They are working in the solution, a firmware solution, and it was what they told me! I don't know more that that!

    David: thanks for mentioning the expected "firmware" update. I believe the new firmware will be specific to each hardware configuration, to enable it to "understand" what's in the updated kext files (both plist, and binary if any). So we need both - like we need both hands for most things.

    Our early 2008 iMac seems to be beachball free at last. I applied the full10.7.4 combo update.

    Hi everyone

     

    This is indeed an annoying issue. I bought my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) i7, on January 2011 online via iStore Philippines. Everything worked fine with Snow Leopard. Upgraded to Mac OS X Lion and this is when the mentioned problems started (Kernel panic and / or spinning Beach Ball at login etc.). I monitored this discussion close but so far no solution. What actions have been taken with my MacBook Pro

     

    1. Clean reinstall of Mac OS X Lion at least 3 times = still the same problem

    2. Premium partner replaced the memories = still the same problem

    3. Opened a case @ Apple. Lot of bla bla and they still pretended that they never heard about this problem. At the end no solution. They just said, it must be the hardware! = so, still the same problem

    4. Changed some parameters in the Apple Graphics Power Management Extension = worked fine some weeks then suddenly again back to the same old problem.

    5. During my stay in the Philippines this year (2012) I just closed the lid to put my Mac to sleep. Suddenly the the coolers were operating like Jumbo Jet engines and the machine was completely overheated and of course freezed. Lost my volume, not accessible anymore!!! Had to restore everything from Time Capsule.

    6. A few weeks later the same happened again. So I decided to bring this sh... machine back to iStore to get it serviced (under Apple Care Protection warranty).

    7. Get it back 2 weeks later. They changed motherboard and harddisk. During restore the replaced harddisk failed again.

    8. After another 2 weeks get the machine back. They replaced the harddisk again. Did not restore from Time Capsule but instead I did a clean install of Mac OS X Lion and all the Apps. Restored then the data only. = still the same annoying problem! So far almost everything have been preplaced!

    9. Installed today the 10.7.4 update = guess? still the same problem.

     

    After all these adventures I am really tired about Mac OS X Lion and my MacBook Pro. Apple does not really care about it. It is almost one year ago they released OS X Lion and we are all still discussing  the same shity issue and there is no solution. Except, DISABLE AUTOMATIC GRAPHICS SWITCHING. This is what I finally did because I lost hope and I am very disappointed about Apple and their service. Have to think carefully if the next notebook will be again an Apple :-(

    Do a fresh erase and install, test it before brining over any data. If its still happening, it's hardware, if not, it's your files. Pretty easy to narrow down

    @FearC

     

    Thanks for your suggestions but everything has been done already. Clean install (no apps and data on it), motherboard and HD replaced by Apple but still the same issue. The only workaround that really helps is disabling automatic graphics switching.

    Did you try the kext fix from around page 49 or so of this thread?

     

    I only ask because disabling the auto graphics switching and that kext fix seem to go hand in hand.

     

    Lots and lots of people have reported that it works.

     

    I've noticed 2 things about the Kext fix that might help you:

     

    1) I've seen the Kext fix get "reversed" by an update (ie 10.7.x to 10.7.x+1)

          This means the issue might come back, but re-applying the fix should re-fix the issue.

     

    2) that XML file is pretty big with lots of duplicated sections (one per macbook model, but the all look the same.

          I would completely understand if someone thought they applied the changes correctly, but in fact applied them to a different section of that file.

     

    So given 1 and 2, and that you've tried everything else, and that disabling the graphics switching, I'd say have another look at that kext fix, even if it's just to confirm the fix is still there and in the right section of the xml file.

    Hi,

     

    I had the same problems with crashes when using my mbp pro (2010), when on login box etc. All these problems started when upgraded to Lion. I tried the Kext fix (well, sort of) 3 weeks ago and my mbp really runs without a hitch! I didn't bother replacing text in that file but as a member posted here, i completely removed that file from  the "Extensions" directory. Now, 3 weeks later, i have absoluteley no problems at all and i run my system with "Automatic Graphics" enabled, so my battery lasts as expected.

     

    I was anxious about the deletion of the file because i wasn't sure to what other problems it may have lead to, but so far, so good.

     

    I installed the latest update , 10.7.4 and i noticed that another version of the file (a different one) was placed again in that directory. Initially, i didn't delete the file and i was hoping that problem was not there, eventually. But my Mbp crashed again 2 days after so i removed that file again from there.

    I had a very interesting phone call with someone from Apple today. First of all the person wanted to know if the issue was reproducable. (My system crahses 9 times out of 10 in the login screen.). So we went through it on the phone. Every time the login screen crashed we made a snapshot, that he had me send him over. Even a little kernel panic came in very handy in this process . He said that he was currently collecting  snapshots from people suffering from this issue and he will be sending the files to Apple engineers and they will take a closer look.

     

    So there is definetely something going on over there at Cupertino and I suppose that help is near.

    if u upgraded x sonw to xlion advice reinstall x sonw cause x lion will slow your mac

    dan_12 and others: For the record, using Lion 10.7.4 on an external FW800 HD, I have successfully booted a MacBoookPro5,1 (2.53GHz Core2 Duo with dual GPUs (Nvidia GeForce 9400M and Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT - No automatic graphics switching available, so this laptop has to be switched manually).

     

    Everything works as it should. No freezes at login or other glitches.

     

    I am currently backing up the laptop using Time-mchine from its internal Snow Leopard 10.6.8 up-to-date HD. If that works, I'll use Migration Assistant to migrate the backup to the External HD, and then swap the drives.

     

    Will let you know if all goes as it should - or not.
