Since installing "Lion" Excel will randomly not recalculate formular using "SUM". If I add new data nothing on the spreadsheet updates.

I see that you have listed that you are using Excel 14.1.2. Exactly which year version of Microsoft Office is that contained in? The reason I ask is that OSX Lion is no longer compatible with older versions of Office for Mac such as Office for Mac 2004. Is that causing your problem? You need to be using Office for Mac 2008 or later.
I'm using version "MAC 2011 Home & Student"!
I have exactly the same problem! I'm not using an iMac but a MacBook Pro, using Office for Mac 2011. Was surprised to find that SUM isn't working on several spreadsheets after installing Lion. Renders Excel very problematic since I can't trust the numbers anymore.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any identified workarounds?

I have the same problem on my brand new MacBook Pro, running Lion with Office 2011. The number produced by a formula does not change when the number in one of the cells referenced in the formula changes. In order to get it to update, I need to go into the formula cell and hit return. Major problem.
I would be looking for assistance and work arounds from MS support. It is they who need to assist folks with their products in regard to a product's operation with the new Mac OS X Lion. They will be needing to put out an update soon it seems. They have had months to make sure that MS apps worked with Lion.
Does anyone know the best route into Microsoft Support to get resolution? My experience with Microsoft is that it's an enormous organization with many "dead ends" in Support. Is there a particular Chat, email, telephone path that leads to folks who are knowledgeable about Excel for Mac 2011?

I figured it out - with some help from Microsoft.
With Excel open:
- Click on Excel in the top left
- Click on Preferences
- Click on Calculation
- Calculate Sheets needs to be set to Automatically
- Save the document
Thanks - that sorted it out. Microsoft replied to me that I should uninstall and reinstall Offive for Mac 2011 which did not help at all.

Unfortunately, it seems to be necessary to do this with each and every document that has the issue. It's rather unbelievable that Microsoft somehow missed this.

In case it helped anyone else, marchibald's response above helped me, and I'm using 10.10.2 Yosemite with Excel 2011. The question remains HOW and why the preference was turned off in the first place, since I had been using Office 11 for years, and that Excel book longer than I'd been using 2011. Sigh. But thank you for the tip.
