Downloading items from Safari's (5.1) Activity window DEAD- Mac OS X.7 Lion

Aargghhh this was brilliant before for grabbing stuff and not working now,

all i get is a massive amount of text showing up and no download anymore.

Yup you can download an earlier version (5.0.6) but Lion will not swallow it

tried pacifist to open the old package but even that fails.

thought i could find it inside and run it.

so....

what now?

is there a way round this?

a third party plug in!

something?

anyone got any idea how to sort this out?

so i can grab filmclips pictures etc...

just like before.

There is a little square with a circle inside of it in the upper right corner of a Safari window. Click on it to to see the downloads window.

Thank you Peggy for your reply BUT...

yes i see this button but this is not the angle of attack i was thinking of,

the button you mention is yes for downloads..

but my area of concern is downloading as before with safari 5.0.6

the small films we often see on websites. youtube films, training films,

grabbing all the artwork from web pages, grabbing even the larger images within those pictures that enlarge when you pan through them but never actualy see the whole image, yes the possibilities were endless.

The activity window>activity (option command A)

find in the activity list the .flv file for egsample you would like to download.

you can see which it is in the long list because it will be ticking up in megabytas as it loads in,

it may say 13 meg or less or more.

double click this and THEN you will see it turn up in the downloads window.

but its not working anymore with Lion.

have i missed something in the new download window for grabbing activity in web pages.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were missing and I'm not sure what you are attempting to do. I rarely encounter the types of pages with the pans you describe and tend to close them quickly as I find them annoying. Static graphics behave for me in the Lion the same as they did in SL--double clicking just opens them in a separate window.

I thought I was the only person who was grieving the loss of this feature. I used it mostly for downloading PDFs as preview handles them so much better than shoddy propriety viewers, or even the "preview in safari" mode. During my degree it was invaluable to me as it also let me save these files into folders and keep them for referencing later.

To further exlpain; it was one of the features which set Safari out from the rest. The activity window shows all the different elements of the website which are either being loaded or which have been downloaded. It will show elements of javascript, images, music, PDFs etc embedded in the page including videos and the like.

Within that activity window, you can also see (and copy!) the DIRECT LINK address of each element of the page. ie: Where the actual media files are being hosted, downloaded or streamed from. Certain sites disable this feature for protected works, as they are entitled to do so, but the vast majority allow it.

When we had a separate downloads window, instead of this overlay box in the Lion safari, it enabled the end user to copy the DIRECT LINK in the activity window using Ctrl + C and do the following:

    1) Either paste it into the address bar to watch/ listen to the media free from the other elements of the page which waste memory/ get in the way

    2) Paste it into the "Downloads" window (Using Ctrl + V) which would instantly start downloading the file, as if you had clicked a "Download file ABC Now" link on a web page.

With the loss of the download window, only option 1 is available. This means that only images and certain formats of video/ audio will be viewable off the website in question ie: ones that quicktime can play. And the current version of quicktime embedded within safari doesn't give you the option to "Download a copy" or "Save as" like older versions used to.

This may necessitate a revisiting of Firefox, which has a "Media browser" function.

I wonder if there is perhaps a bookmarklet out there which forces a download of whatever is dragged onto it. Any ideas?

I used this feature the whole time so would be really interested if any work around comes up. Have you reported this on Feedback?

    I have not reported it.

For lots of file types you can paste this link into the address bar and it will download.

For others, like PDFs you can click the download button once it is open in preview within safari (although this is probably an annoyance for people with bandwidth caps!)

I think there must be a workaround which consists of removing the plugins as described in this cnet link: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10328402-263.html - as when there is no plugin the browser is forced to download file types as it can't read them otherwise, but this is less than satisfactory, in my opinnion.

I hope a solution or fix arises. Please report as feedback if you have the time, which unfortunately I do not.

When we had a separate downloads window, instead of this overlay box in the Lion safari, it enabled the end user to copy the DIRECT LINK in the activity window using Ctrl + C and do the following:

Go to Safari's Window menu and open the Activity window.

There you'll see the list of URLs for the current page if you expand the line marked with the name of the page you opened.

You can copy from that list all you want to using Command-C without issue; for example I grabbed this direct link from Amazon (look near the bottom edge of the window), which may not still work by the time you read this:

Thank you for your response. The issue is not with copying from that list we can copy from that list just fine, as I explained above:

Where there is a loss of functionality is in the ability to take one of those direct links and force its download, rather than its being displayed within the browser.

If you paste that direct link from amazon in the address bar it will open in safari and then you will have the option to right click and save as etc. Previously we have been able to paste a direct link using Ctrl + V directly into the downloads window, which negates the requirement to (in effect) download that data twice. Once to the browser and once again to the downloads folder.

It was quick, easy and 'just worked' and now we're on the hunt for workarounds such as removing the plugins from safari so that the paste of a direct link into the address bar forces a download. This is undoubtedly a retrograde step, as if this is the only workaround I am stuck with only one option in the handling of file types, whereas before I could choose.

It's not exactly documented (what in Lion is? ), but option-double clicking on the line in the Activity window will download the item to your Downloads folder.

For that matter, once you have downloaded something such that the button to open the Downloads window is there, clicking it to open the Downloads window and doing a Command-V will download the pasted URL to your Downloads folder.

Thank you everybody for your help with this.

it has been usefull and again thanks to everyone.

now i have the hang of it,

it is not dead as i thought.

William pointed out that some places did not enable this feature and so it would never work.

but for the most it is working as it should.
