convert video for apple tv

I use for 10 years ULEAD ( pc) for editing my video in mpeg 2 full hd (1920x1080) and play my video with external hard disk (4geek).

about 2 years ago apple change my life.

I've imac 27 i5, Apple TV and macbook pro 13", canon camera EOS 350 D, canon video camera HV20 full hd, tape record ( no hd, or flash memory).

with imovie is that ok, but the problem is how convert video for apple tv in maximum resolution 1280 using imovie or quick time?

I understand 1280 is possible only with apple tv with hard disk, apple tv without hard disk work only in streaming and the resolution is maximum 960.( it is not may case).

I import my video in HDV format in Imovie ( that's ok) prepare video and edit in .mov format full hd 1920x1080 and archive video and use it like a master.( I hope in the future apple tv increase your capacity to full HD).

now I prepare all for edit video in itunes and after synchronize my apple tv.

now begin the problem, with imovie the format for apple tv is 960, if i create a video with resolution 1280 Itunes import video correctly but the synchronize with apple tv is unsupported ( video unsupported).

ok now lion upgrade done, try with quick movie convert, there is a apposite function convert for apple tv resolution 1280, I think perfect, i convert video an import in itunes, synchronize my apple tv but the error is the same.

I think how is possible, I use only all software apple! why it'is not compatible video? I used a correct application!!!

I found only one possibility I use tost( roxio) and convert video for apple tv in 1280 format, import in itunes, synchronize and it's all ok, but the quality is not perfect, specially in photo video, in movie video the difference is not appreciate, I think the convert motor ins't apple but roxio.

apple tv is up to date

I think there is a problem in quick time, or problem with firmware in apple tv.

there are another solutions?

thank you so much for help

Welcome to the Apple Community.

If you are using iMovie to edit your video, share to iTunes and choose either Large or 720p.

720p will not play on the Apple TV 1, even if you are using PAL. Although the Apple TV 1 will play 720p at 24 or 25 fps the bitrate produced by share/iTunes/720p is too high.

It simply isn't worth trying to create 720p for the Apple TV 1, it won't look any better than 540p.

ok 720p corresponding HD resolution 1080p corresponding Full HD, my tv is bang & olufsen beovision 7-40" full hd,

and the integration with ATV is perfect, the upscaling is perfect, and it is connect with hdmi cable.

the problem is convert video from imovie to ATV whit maximum resolution 720p corresponding 1280x720.

my ATV support 720p I bought it one year ago it is the last version with internal hard disk.

the resolution is the same like last version without hd, and i prefer it because i can use it without my imac on.

than you so much Wiston🙂,

i check video create to ATV from roxio and from quick time, the difference is compressor H.264( roxio version 10) and quick time H.264-1, and the bit rate, in roxio is about 5 Mb/sec in quick time is about 6 Mb/sec.

i suppose if in quick time there is a special function to convert video to ATV for me is ok, but my ATV unsupported it, and I haven't found possibility to modify video setup for ATV.

I suppose the problem is the bit rate, i must try to manual set up.

I try to convert with itunes but the problem is the same, in itunes watch my video perfect but is impossible to synchronize myATV.

only with roxio convert video in 720p (1280x720) 5Mb rate, but I want convert all with apple software.

when my imac is on and itunes is on, and i watch video save in my ATV ( 720p) ATV prefer connect with imac ( itunes) and work in streaming and the video is not fluid ( the video file in ATV and itunes is the same), if i switch off itunes ATV read file in your hard disk and the video is perfectly fluid.

i use time capsule to connect imac with ATV, i think it is not a problem.

i don't know why i can not create a video file correct to ATV with quick time or Itunes.

the problem is special in video photo.

for me loss a option per convert video to ATV.

sorry for my english i hope you have understood all

my discovery apple to be continued.....

thank's for help

If a video plays fluidly from the Apple TV hard drive but not from your iTunes library the problem is with your network and not the type of video compression used in the video file.

Some of the problems you face converting video for your Apple TV 1 may be as a result of much of the newer Apple software being aimed at the Apple TV 2 which can play higher specification video. As I said previously if you are using iMovie to create video choose the share to iTunes option and set the resolution to Large.

If however you no longer have your original project in iMovie this would be difficult, what I'd suggest is that rather than fiddling with manual settings on Roxio, that you simply reimport your 1080 movie back into iMovie and use the Large setting to export it again for the Apple TV 1.

I've done much testing to produce video for the Apple TV 1 and can confirm that while you can produce 720p video from PAL recordings which will play on the Apple TV 1, the results are no better than sticking with 960 x 540 and are arguabally worse. This pageshows the same frame from a 720p export and from a 540p export, look at the detail difference on the back of the hand for example (you can play the two videos yourself using the tabs at the top of the page to see what you think, personally I think the 540p is better.

sorry, are you sure?

when I bought my ATV I compared ATV1 and ATV2 and the video performances are the same, infact I play my video in 1280x720 with my ATV but it is convert with toast.

I compared the same video in ATV (720p) and in mpeg 2 (1920x1080 25 Mb/sec) with my medley 4geek and the quality is the same.

imovie rendering is better than Ulead 11.5, is more fluid and compens the resolution difference,

another problem, is impossible to create a video .mpe2(fullhd) with imovie, for that I bought ATV.

I'm satifation to my ATV abbinate my TV, at 50 centimiters I don't see the pixel resolution, this is a good result, I think.

mah!!!!!

why toast convert correct to ATV and apple software no?

i think a firmware problem!there isn't chose video for ATV1 or ATV2

I check my wireless speed to airport for my ATV is ok maximum signal.

this is a misteryus ......

Apple TV 1 will only play 720p movies at 24 or 25 fps up to 5 Mbps or 960 x 540 at 30 fps, the Apple TV will play video at all frame rates at 720p and around about double the data rate.

Are you sure your camera produces mpeg2 files. If so you might not see an awful lot of difference between the original and the converted videos because h264 is significantly more efficient than mpeg2, although I'd expect you to see some. If your files from your camera are actually h264 wrapped in an mpeg2 container then I'd expect you to see more difference.

I don't fully understand what you are asking here.

why toast convert correct to ATV and apple software no?

Possibly because when you are using toast you are choosing a datarate that is compatible with the Apple TV (ie 5 Mbps or less), whereas if you are using (for example) quicktime preset for the Apple TV, you might be making files that are compatible with the Apple TV 2 but not the Apple TV 2, but it's difficult to say without knowing what settings you are using.

about the characteristics ATV1 vs ATV2 apparent are same!

however you help me so much to understand, I'll try to edit my video with imovie with personal set up 720p and fix the bit rate up to 5 Mb 24 frame/sec.

my camera recoding to tape in HDV.

when i used pc with ulead 11.5 during the import camera to pc, automatically uled convert file in mpeg full hd 24 frame/sec bit rate 25 Mbit/sec.

I prefer work with original format HDV and convert video at the end of project.

the date of my first video is in 1998 with analogic camera ( chicago seattle on the road), in 2004 i bought my first digital camera canon dv, and 2008 my first hdv camera.

I' prepare about mpeg files but i don't understand very well apple format for ATV

When i bought my imac I think prepare my video with final cut, but i don't have time to learn another software and try with imovie, for me fantastic for home made video semi professional, perfect but is impossible to edit video in mpeg2 hd, i think because this format lost the battle with blu ray format ( sony) my old medley read perfectly mpeg hd format, ulead 11.5 is the last software with that option edit mpeg2 Full hd.

for this reason i must buy ATV.

with surprise the quality imovie+ATV 720p is superior respect uled 11.5( now corel)+medley 4geek 1080p mpeg2, for these reason I'm pass all in apple philosophy.

thank you so much Winston for time spent for explain me.

if I found a set up with imovie to convert video in 720p per ATV1, inform you and community

That's to be expected.

mpeg2 is compressed, compressed video cannot be edited, it needs to be decompressed, iMovie will do the same as Ulead but it will convert it to AIC when the video is imported.
