iMac keyboard numeric keypad not responding

Since installing Lion on my 24" iMac, the numeric keypad of my original iMac keyboard does not work anymore. I did reset the PRAM, but that did not do anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jean F.

Thanks so much for this easy reset!

I've had this issue so long - even had to send a keyboard back to Amazon because I'd lost the functionality of the numeric keypad.

Easy solution: Go to System Preferences / Accessibility /

On the left pane, select Mouse & Trackpad

Deselect 'Enable Mouse Keys'.

Mouse Keys allows the mouse pointer to be controlled using the keyboard number pad...hence why the numbers are disabled!

I would try going into your keyboard settings under System Preferences and see if any of the settings there helps you. One way to figure out if it is picking up the right keyboard is to go to 'Modifier Keys' and see what keyboard it is listing. Another way is to go into 'About This Mac' located under the Apple Icon and select System Report. Then go to USB, which is where you should find info on your keyboard to see what it is reporting. That should at least give you a better idea of what may or may not be going on.

This is what System Report lists for this keyboard. It looks normal.

In System Preferences, the Modifier Keys were at default. I'm using the U.S. Extended input source and when I load the keyboard viewer I can see which keys are recognized while typing. For the numeric keypad, the number keys do not work, but all the keys around the keypad work. For example, Clear, = / * - + and Enter. But not the numbers. It's really weird because it was working fine with 10.6.8 before the upgrade.

Well, I'm having the same problem!

I cannot get the numbers on the numeric keypad to work.

This is especially annoying when working with excel as you have to enter a lot of numbers!

When starting up Windows with Parallels the numeric keypad works as expected so it is not a hardware problem.

If this is intentional changed it's as stupid as the keyboard repeat not working anymore.

(at least I got that working again)

Yes, thank you. I tried the Mouse settings and resetting PRAM, but that did not do anything. Also, when using VMware with Win7, the keyboard acts the same as with Lion: no number keys function.

I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue. So just in case, I ordered yesterday a new Apple keyboard. There are no Num Lock key on this original keyboard. I'll keep you posted.

Here is a link to possible udates you might want to try:

http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.psp.more&locale=e n_US&q=Keyboard%20OR%20Mouse

Also, here is so more info. that you might want to check out:

  • Press the Num Lock key.If you have a separate numeric keypad on your keyboard, the Num Lock key is located in the numeric keypad. If you’re using a portable computer, the Num Lock is a function key, marked Num Lock (F6). If your keyboard has a separate keypad but no Num Lock key, try pressing Shift-Clear.
  • If the numeric keypad still doesn’t work as you expect, you may have enabled Mouse Keys, which lets you move the pointer with the keypad. To find the option that turns off Mouse Keys, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Universal Access, and then click “Mouse & Trackpad.”

Most portable computers have a group of keys on the keyboard that can function as the numeric keypad. To find the keypad, look for small numbers or symbols in the lower-right corner of keys on the right side of your keyboard. Press the Num Lock key (F6) to turn on the keypad. The green light glows on the Num Lock key when the keypad is active.

Hi Pondini,

The settings in Universal Access did the trick. thanks for the hint.

BTW, I did a fresh install of snow leopard on an external hard drive and checked the Mouse Keys setting.

In SL the default is OFF so that's why I probably didn't remember changing this setting.

It appears the Lion default is just the opposite.

Hi, I just hd the same problem. This is not an apple problem is a windows problem.

When running windows on parallels, go to the windows start menu - all programs - accesories - ease of access - - - and open the "on screen keyboard".

Then activate the numeric keypad and press the num lock key on so that numbers are displayed in the virtual keyboard. Once you do that it should work.
