I want to upgrade to Lion and am wondering if SPSS 18 will work?
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I am using SPSS 19, and it will not run under Lion. The error seems to refer to Java. However, version 19 ran well under Snow Leopard after I applied the Java patch. I cannot find any information about this on the IBM website, but the IBM website is a disaster generally and it is normally of little value.
Actually, after some additional attempts, it will run but reports a license problem:
>Error # 7001
>There is no license for IBM SPSS Statistics.
>Execution of this command stops.
>Specific symptom number: 18
I uninstalled SPSS 18 and then did the upgrade to Lion. Upon reboot I was prompted to install some Java applet and then installed SPSS 19 since my company has a site license. So far, so good. Never got 18 to work, though.
Lion + SPSS 19.0.0.1 = Not working. Several issues - Java, Complex Samples, Output etc. Does not seem to have anything to do with IBM/SPSS 19 (perhaps) ... more to do with the OS update. Problem is that, this might require an uninstall of Lion and back to 10.6. No tech help @ IBM URL either.
FYI - Spoke with Apple Tech Support today for possible solution. Back to OS 10.6 means a complete fresh install with Leopard boot disc. Will need to back up entire data + any programs/apps, as this process overwrites HD. Reinstall everything including SPSS 19 and take it from there. Not fun.
I was running PASW (SPSS) 18, and when I inititally upgraded to Lion and installed the java update it worked fine. I was having issues with the operating system, though, and had to do a clean install of Lion to fix the problem. I used the migration assistant to restore my computer with my last back up from time-machine, and now it says my license isn't valid. Very frustrating. I called the SPSS tech support and they said IBM is no longer supporting the older versions of SPSS. Big surprise.
I have not tried to do a fresh Lion install, I just upgraded. Perhaps there is some benefit for SPSS 18/19 users to do that, as it might work. The catch is the license, but IBM will generate a new code for reinstall on same machine lock code. They did for me, via email Tech support. Also, the institution can generate another EULA license for you.
As as alternate, I did the same setup on my windows side within Lion, using Virtual Box. So far SPSS 19 has no issues. I would rather this work on the Lion side though.
Thank you for the fresh install and restoration idea with migration assistant.
When I upgraded to LION with java update, SPSS 18 worked fine. Some while after, I had some problems with my hard-disk so I did fresh installation of LION and SPSS in a new HHD. With java upgrade, it also worked, after authentification (I have a site license). Initially there was a problem to open excel files, saying "heap size jvmcfg.ini..." I changed libspssjvm.dylib using 18.0.3.4 Hotfix, and it now works well.
So at least with site licence, SPSS seems to work in Lion either with upgrade or with fresh installation.
It works though, it cannot draw charts for JVM problem. I'm now searching 18.0.3.4 Hotfix to resolve this problem, but IBM seems no longer uploads the 18 version.
Hi Yosh, could you tell me where can I download 18.0.3.4 Hotfix? I can't find it in IBM support website.
Check this out.

It worked for me 🙂
It works perfectly with Lion. The only thing you need is to update your license by requering a new authorization code. No problem at all.
I am getting the same error
