Internet really slow after upgrading to Lion from Leopard!

Yesterday I upgraded to Lion from Leopard on my 2007 iMac (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), and everything seems to be running very smooth, except the internet is painfully slow! I know it is not an ISP or network issue because the internet on my iPad is running fast as ever on the same network.

Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I've also got issues with Internet on Lion, networking in general is just one big mess in Lion it seems. Before, on SL, my wifi just worked perfectly, very fast. Now it just is painfully slow. In the beginning, after installing Lion, I couldn't even connect to my router at all. I constantly got the Self Assigned IP message while nothing changed on my router (all other pc's and my iphone worked flawlessly). I tried everything I could find and in the end solved it by resetting the router to it's factory defaults (go figure 😕 ).

Anyway, even now the wifi from my Macbook Pro is just so slow that it takes ages to load a page and god forbid I try loading a youtube page or something. Even trying to copy a file from my NAS on my own network is like waiting for Godot. Clearly something is wrong with (wireless) networking within Lion, let's hope Apple fixes this as soon as possible because this is really not what you expect of OS X 😟

Any more on this? Mine is doing exactly the same thing.

Since upgrading my internet is fast most of the time, but occasionaly it will sit for 20 seconds or more attempting to load a page (like a DNS issue or something) and then once it does decide to load, it loads fast. This happens on both my iMac (late 2009 with 4 GB RAM) and my Mac Book (4,1 also with 4 GB RAM).

My iPad and Galaxy S phone seem unaffected by this. At first I thought it was my new cable modem, but I am guessing not since it only seems to be affecting the Lion devices. If I do a speed test while I am seeing this issue it shows my full network speed (about 12 mbps down 1 mbps up, which is what my service is).

I am running only wireless, no wired ethernet. Is there any settings I should check out?

I am having the same issue, but I made a change a few minutes ago that appears to be working (at least at the moment). The problem is intermittent so I can't say for sure that this going to last.

On my iMac I had both my Ethernet and Wi-Fi "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP with manual address" with a different address assigned to each connection type. I changed to "Using DHCP", clicked "Renew DHCP Lease", and then applied the changes. Things seem to be working better/normal.

Hope that this helps all/some of you. I'll certainly share if things change. I hope I can go back to "Using DHCP with manual address" at some point in the future.

I meant to mention - I didn't have this issue (or at least didn't appear to) right after Lion was first installed, but it was very apparent when I sat down this morning.

I was having the same problem - losing my wifi connection, slow connection, as a result not retrieving mail, etc. When I checked diagnostics everything was all green until ISP and that's where I had problems with things being lit up yellow and red, intermittently.

The solution that seems to have worked for me (after now having been on for several hours without experiencing the problem again) was to simply click on the Advanced tab of Network Preferences, delete my network from Preferred Networks, and then use Network Setup Assistant to create it again.

I don't know if that automatically reconfigured the DNS Server or exactly what happened, but after deleting and setting up again, things seem to be okay.

Yes, overall the system is slower. My machine is a 2007 MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM. The interface effects (window zooms, etc.) seem to be problematic in certain cases. For example, if I try to open 50+ images into Preview all at once, which was not a problem under previous versions of Mac OS X, quite often stalls halfway opening the window, and when finally open the application beachballs frequently. Really, really slow.

I'm sure these performance issues will be addressed in future updates, but it's really disappointing that Lion performs so poorly on older hardware.

Y'know, after I reported a solution earlier, I actually discovered that it wasn't working for me either, but I have now found something that does seem to work. It's been roughly 24 hours and things are still okay. What I'm going to suggest isn't ideal, shouldn't be necessary, and is kind of annoying, but it is getting it done.

It seems that my problems arise when data transfer ceases (I pause to think or get a drink of water, or whatever), so the connection drops if there isn't a constant transfer of data happening.

So what I have done is to launch Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and at the cursor type in "ping [your ip address]."

By pinging my ip address, I'm creating a tiny amount of data transfer (enough to keep things active, but not so much that I'm eating up my resources), which keeps the connection active. Then minimize the terminal window so that it stays open and runs in the background.

As I say, it's lame, but it has actually done the job. I was working late last night, fell asleep without powering down, and when I got up this morning everything was still running and all good - even after bringing my iMac out of sleep mode.

Or, as you suggest, you could just go back to SL until they patch this up. But if you want to take one last shot, this is what has made the difference for me.

Cheers.

I tried using both OpenDNS and Google DNS and neither made a difference for me.

I rebooted into Windows and the problem is there somewhat, but not as noticeable. I notice with Windows it might freeze up for 1 or 2 seconds or I can hit the link a second time and it will go right to the page. With Lion it tends to hang and never load. So maybe Lion just doesn't play well with my router/modem where Windows seems to be able to get along okay. I don't really notice any issue on my mobile devices.

I also tested and noticed the behavior on both wired and wireless networks. Makes no difference.

It's not a problem with the wifi dropping or not working anymore after it went into sleep mode, it's a constant slow connection where before everything just worked perfectly. It's also not a router or DNS issue as everything is the same as before Lion got installed. I also messed around with those settings to try things out but nothing seems to improve the slow connection. All things point to an issue with Lion, I've almost eliminated all other possibilities.
