Upgraded Late 2006 MBP to Lion, so far so good

I'm also interested in experiences with Macbook late 2006 and Lion, as I'm not sure about the upgrade. In my case, I have the white Macbook 2 GHz CPU and upgraded the RAM to 2 GB, so I have the minimun requirements.

Anyone with that "old" machine and Lion?

What did you use for the 7200rpm HD? I have the same macbook and am about to overhaul it like you did. I have heard so much confliting info about this MBP with Lion. Though mine is only 2.0ghz.

Just to say that I finally made the upgrade and it runs as smooth as Snow Leopard does. I have the 4GB of RAM (only 3 working) upgrade also and I have yet the option of the SSD, but I'm using a lot my new iMac and the iPad, so the Macbook is not working hard now and I didn't remove the HD.

If your CPU is a 2.0 GHz, the odds are you have a Core Duo not a Core 2 Duo. This means that Lion will not be available for you. Snow Leopard is as far as you can go.

No, mine is the late 2006 which is Macbook 2,1 one of the first Core2Duo.

If you have a late 2006 MBP you indeed can install Lion on your MBP. Note the attached link for a late 2006 MBP:

The CPU is a 2.33, GHz, not the 2.0 GHZ that you originally mentioned. 2.0 GHz CPUs were only Core Duos, hence the confusion which now has been resolved.

I generally don't advise people with 10.5 era Mac's to even bother with Lion due to the fact that their machines are near their end of life stage anyway and they would have to invest in all new software on a older machine.

Lion killed my second machine, a 2006 Core 2 Duo, killed it as dead as a doornail.

Took it to Apple and told them it was Lion that did it, even wiped and installed Snow Leopard and still it wouldn't work.

Since I was out of AppleCare and out of the four year Nvidia video card recall, I was basically screwed out of a currently worth $800 machine that could have lasted another several years more on 10.6.8.

It just so happened I bought a 17" Early 2011 before Lion came along as hardware insurance, but still I lost the value of having that second Mac to use.

I am just doing something to tie me over. So far Apple says this specific Macbook wont even be able to support Mtn Lion (in any shape or form). I am really only spending $250 all together, and I think my comp should last me an other 3-4 years. I can live with that. (or until my web browser stops providing updates, thats what prompted this upgrade.)

I dont even think I am going to touch Lion, some people say it works fine, some people have gone back to SL cause it had too many probs. My machine is in primo condition. I think your comment just made up my mind for me.

Very good, but note that is a Macbook, not a Macbook Pro. There is a separate forum for Macbooks which means you are an interloper who is confusing MBP people. (just kidding)

Exactly, but if you also notice in my first post (before you butted in, just kidding) I was only curious to know how Lion was running for HIM. What you posted "in response" to me had nothing to do with what I was asking.

If that occurs, just switch to Firefox, they are good about supporting as many older machines and operating systems as possible especially when it comes to certificates.

Apple is slow to update the certificates, Mozilla will ban the bad ones from FF right away, like overnight. 🙂

Yup, that is exactly what happend. Then Firefox stopped providing updates. Then I even got a pop-up in my Gmail saying "google is no longer supporting this version of firefox. some features may not work." haha. that was a few days ago, and mostly what lit the fire under my butt. Guess it was time.
