Error: URLs with the type "file" are not supported

I've been getting the same error message, often one after the other, since updating to Lion.

I have the same problem and I noticed that my .me drive is no longer on my desktop.

I have the same message since updating to Lion. Really annoying. But apparently You just need to plug in your external hard drive and run Time Machine. Doing that now, we'll see.

spoke to an apple tech about this problem. He got back to me a few days later. Apparently its a bug with time machine. Just plug in your external drive and perform a back-up. This worked for me. Your other alternative is to turn off time machine.

I'm having the same problem, except that the error message happens twice. I get the error message, hit "Return" to get rid of the first error message, and another message with the same error appears. After I click OK again, I'm not bothered for a while, but it keeps happening all day long.

I just managed to fix the problem! I went into the Preferences (hold down Apple icon top left of screen and select "System Preferences"), clicked on the "Time Machine" icon (next to last row towards the right), and slid the ON/OFF switch to the OFF position. Like magic...no annoying error message! All I have to do now is remember to turn it back on now and then to back up my laptop.

People have said switch Time Machine off, or re-designate a different hard drive.

But I don't want to turn my Time Machine off, because then it won't remind me about backups. Nor do I have a different external hard drive to designate; nor do I want to keep my time machine hard drive plugged in all the time.

Boring!!! Must have clicked that OK button 9 milllion times since I got Lion. WHat a waste of energy.

Yes, turning off Time Machine yesterday worked great for me to get rid of the annoying pop-ups. Unfortunately, when that laptop died this morning, I didn't have a recent backup because I had plugged in my external hard drive yesterday and, forgetting I'd switched Time Machine off, didn't get my latest writing work saved. Yeesh.

I turned Time Machine off, but do turn it back on once a week to back up my files. If you want a daily back up it might be a good idea to turn off Time Machine in the morening, and at night, before going to bed, turnin it back on and plug the computer into your backup disk. Sorry to hear your laptop died and lost some work Clatter Amy.

Thanks, nantzin. I seem to have a knack for losing data just before getting it backed up, but that just goes with the digital territory, right? I only have myself to blame for not turning Time Machine back on, but it did come after many hours spent troubleshooting a variety of issues, including this one, only to have the laptop die anyway!
