Unable to disable SMB file sharing: Incorrect password error

I'm not sure if this problem was present prior to updating to Lion from the latest 10.6, but I can't seem to disable file sharing using SMB on my MBP. I've only known to have used my login password as the same login when I activated SMB share a while back, and now all I get when using the same password is "Incorrect Password". I've tried implementing most of the suggestions I've found in this forum and on the web and that included resetting the password in System Preferences > Users & Groups (Accounts). I logged in using another admin account and it would not also let me turn off SMB sharing and returning an error "Incorrect Password" whenever I typed in what I believe to be the correct password (which is the user/admin pw used to log into the account currently being used). I have also tried: looking through the System Preferences > Security & Privacy (in hopes that FileVault has a hand in this, and it is currently off), then tried repairing Keychain (newp), and lastly, changed the Master Password to no avail. The one suggested fix I didn't try is creating a new user account and migrating all my files to that account. I'd rather not since that is way too much hassle just to turn off SMB sharing.

If anyone has ideas on how to reset or turn off file sharing using SMB, or knows how to resolve this issue, please post some help as this is driving me batty.

Thanks!

PS. Also another unrealted question: Is AirDrop not supported on a 2008 MBP? For the life of me, I couldn't find AirDrop anywhere on my mac (looked at the sidebar and prefs to enable it and it's not there as an option). My card type is an AirPort Extreme (802.11 a/b/g/n -- with firmware Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0)

Another page suggested that you simply re-change your password (using System Preferences | Users) which didn't work for me. However, after reading through all these links, and having had toyed with this a few years ago on OS X and Linux, I am pretty sure that all this is rather dependant on the "smbpasswd" command, which I cannot find anywhere on my system!!??

Could it be that's it's all failing simply because that piece of the puzzle is missing?

the smbpasswd tool is probably not there because Lion doesn't use Samba. Apple built their own Windows Services to replace Samba in Lion. This may also explain why the incorrect password error is happening when migrating. Because the SMB sharing is being handled by custom tools, not Samba, the migration utility doesn't translate the smb password information from one to the other properly. If you create a new account in Lion, you can modify it because it was created using the new Windows Services.

Also just to be clear (since several suggested fixes only address external login problems), the "Incorrect password error" I encounter does not only occur when accessing my Mac from a Windows machine, more specifically, that error is happening locally, on my machine while I try to enable/disable an existing user account's SMB sharing. I've attached the screen cap below:

PS. As a note, this error is not consistent apparently with all Macs, as I've had cowerks who did the upgrade from SL to Lion that does not see this error. These are the newer MBPs though compared to my early 2008 17" MBP. Not sure if it has anything to do with hardware but just wanted to throw that out there.

Going to add an update to this, for stuff I have tried, I just made a CCC of my drive, reinstalled LION from scratch and then did migration assistant, this time I didnt choose any of the computer or network settings, still no dice, I even unchecked file sharing before I did the CCC. Meh, hopefully someday apple will acknowledge this and fix it.

I really would like to not have to share EVERYTHING THAT MY MAIN ACCOUNT HAS ACCESS TO to everyone else on my network.

I've found a solution (10.7.1, unable to turn on Samba login for my primary account, using FileVault2);

  1. Go to Preferences / Users & Groups
  2. Change your password.
  3. Disable sharing access for Guest.
  4. Create a new Sharing Only account.
  5. In Sharing Preferences, enable Samba access for the account you just made.
  6. Optional: undo the changes you made in steps 3 and 2.
  7. Enable/disable Samba for your account.
  8. Optional: remove the new account.
