Toshiba SSD vs Samsung SSD and inconsistent read/write speeds

Why Apple ??? Why ??

Yeah...I have the new 2011 11 inch Macbook Air, with the high end- default configuration (128GB SSD, 4GB Ram). Did a bunch of research on this whole Samsung-Toshiba thing, turns out my 11 inch has the slower Toshia drive! I'm really disappointed, considering I spent $1200 on a portable laptop, I expect it to be pretty much perfect, and it's a let down knowing I didn't get what a lot of other people paying the same price might be getting. Anything on this Apple?

My wife and I both got MBAs at the same time. She got the Toshiba SSD and I got the Samsung. I ran Xbench on both and, sure enough, the Samsung benched higher.

However, I spent 72 hours straight (with only a few naps) working on both these machines, installing software and messing around with them. I can GUARANTEE you won't be able to tell the difference. They are both uber quick and snappy, even side by side.

I am sure that if I ran some tests with a stopwatch mine would finish a few seconds sooner. But quite frankly I have better things bro do with my time than obsess over such a trivial and inconsequential difference. YMMV. :)

Pt Boater are you going to exchange it for a new one?

No. Why would I? Both my MBA work flawlessly. I'm not going to let a few MB per second in some benchmark program ruin what has otherwise been a truly amazingly positive experience. I love my MBAs! :)

I really like mine, too. I have a 13" i7 256GB and it is SM256C (Samsung). I wonder if there is a correlation between i5/i7 and Toshiba/Samsung?

It's unfair, paying the same price and get different hardware.

Are you looking to get a response from Apple here? If so you're going to be left wanting. This is a user-to-user discussion forum, if you wish to communicate with Apple you'll need to get on the phone with AppleCare or bring it into the store.

You can also return the machine and buy a new one, it's a 50/50 chance.

I have the Toshiba drive in my 13" MBA with the 128GB SSD. A co-worker has the same model machine with a Samsung drive.

As Apple doesn't promise a minimum SSD read/write speed I don't really see any justification for them to offer an exchange on a unit unless it's defective (which this would not be considered defective in their eyes). Thus my recommendation for the return. The other problem is there's no discernible markings on the outside of the box that indicate which drive is in the machine, plus Apple doesn't let you "try before you buy."

Even given the slower Toshiba speeds, I'd be really curious to see someone max out the capabilities of either drive.

I read about this today at work. I checked my 13" MBA with a 256 SSD and have the Samsung SSD. Big surprise to me as I usually do not come out well with the luck of the draw.

Went to the Apple Store today, took advantage of the no-hassle exchange/return program, and told the manager of my situation and what I was trying to do. After opening the new 'exchanged for' Macbook Pro 11 inch, went to the system profiler and there it was! Got the Samsung SSD in my new one. So now I have the 128GB/4GB 11 inch MBA with a Samsung SSD!

I am one out of the not so lucky group! So it's MBA 13" and Toshiba. I will not exchange this MBA. Based on my typicall usage I am pretty sure I will not feel the difference and we all hope that in some future point in time the Samsung SSD will not have any heeting (or wathever) issue because of all that nice performace. 😁

I checked out the Airs today at a local Apple Store. Of the three 11" two had the Samsung. All 13" had the Toshiba. Despite having "slower" drive the 13" didn't feel any slower than the 11". I did some iMovie rendering using the exisiting projects and created some 1080p movie clips. The clip I chose was 56 seconds long and the 11" took about 4-5 minutes to render. The 13" took a little less time so the hard drive didn't seem to make any difference.

Has anyone used the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test software program which can be found in the Mac app store, and do the disk speed for Sangsung SSD?

I got my new MBA,13 inch,i7 processor, SSD model: TS256C which is the Toshiba one! n I did the disk speed test for it. According to the result, the write speed scored around 180MB/s , the read speed scored around 205MB/s.

any comment?

Can you feel the speed difference between a 1.8GHz processor and a 1.6GHz processor? However there is a speed difference right?
