After many months of having this same problem of not being able to access the iTunes store on my Windows Vista laptop (status bar just hangs with no error message), I then just bought an iPad and just had to get my Windows Vista PC up and running with iTunes again in order to sync with my iPad. I read through this whole string and would like to give some tips.

First, uninstall all Apple software including iTunes (using control panel; remove/repair software) in a particular order to ensure there would be no residual files. For those interested the order is:

(1) iTunes; (2) QuickTime; (3) Apple Software Update; (4) Apple Mobile Device Support; (5) Bonjour; and (6) Apple Application Support.

Next, run Ccleaner on the Registry (optional, I think)*

Next, go here and follow the instructions.

When you run "Autoruns", obviously determine if one of the publishers is on the list.

If so,

1. Highlight one of the entries and look for the date of the file at the bottom of the Autoruns app.

2. In WINDOWS (Not Internet) Explorer, go to Program Files and highlight the date column.

3. In Windows Explorer still, type in the same date as the entry you found in Autoruns

4. View the serch results. Programs with the same date are most likely the culprit. In my case, it was Sprint SmartView.

5. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, and uninstall the culprit program (if you don't need it), if you do, look for an update. Maybe that will solve the problem. If none, I don't know how to help you.

6. In my case, Sprint SmartView would not unisntall completeley. It errored out during the uninstall. However, it completed enough of the unistall to delete the entries viewable in Autoruns again.

7. Run Autoruns again to see if the culprit entries are gone.

Next, do a clean reinstall of the newest downloadable version of iTunes from iTunes.com

That should do it!!!

Just for fun, you can run Autoruns again and the culprit entries should be gone but an entry for Bonjour should be there.

*Note: I run CCleaner on the Registry ocassionaly and I did this after removing all of the Apple products, just to ensure there were no dangling entries left (and there were). I would hope this is not necessary, but if you still have problems, trying running CCleaner (downloadable off of the Net) after you de-install all of the Apple products.

Wow. You found the solution. Tried uninstalli g apps, deleting all traces of the Apple files, then reinstalling the who bunch of Apple programs. Had no success.

Simple ran the command below, and viola! I was able to connect to the ITunes store right away. Didn't need to restart, or uninstall. Just ran the command in a DOS prompt.

netsh winsock reset

Thanks Tracy!

Do you know what? After having the same problems and reading eight pages of how people are trying to self remedy APPLE's ISSUE, I have decided to just dump the programme. I cannot for the life of me get this thing to work, after 8 pages

Uninstalled and reinstalled from website. Yes uninstalled everything with the word Apple in it.

Still a problem

Turned off firewall and antivirus.

Allowed program in firewall and antivirus.

Still problems accessing.

The problem with the guys at apple is they know that people love their products so they put minimal effort into solving source issues like this, knowing that you'll want the product anyway.

I'll just use another store in future and import the stuff to my existing iTunes, easier.

When they get their ***** in order, I might download iTunes again.

Absolutely nothing has worked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times in the "order" provided, I have done the "netsh winsock reset", disabled Norton, validadted iTunes can get through Windows Firewall, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

NOTHING WORKS! For a company that makes BILLIONS of dollars, why can't they figure this out? HOW PATHETIC IS THIS?!?

@Arnoldsw - worked perfectly, the villian for me was Bigfoot IPv6 Winsock installed on my Alienware 14x. Although oddly it wasn't a problem originally (maybe I activated it without realising).

Many thanks!

Okay....this is what worked for me. I have Real Player Plus which uses Speedbit as a download accelerator. I got in touch with support at Real.com and they said this was a known issue. Their "workaround" until it is fixed is to uninstall RealPlayer completely. This includes uninstalling the program as well as any folders in C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer and in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real. You may or may not have a Real folder in Common Files. I didn't. After I uninstalled, I checked to see if I could access the iTunes store and.....yay.....it worked! Then I went to Real.com and downloaded the newest version. If you have Real Player Plus, you'll then need to sign in with your account info and it will update that too. It still works....it's a good day!

BTW, I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit processor.
