Mac OS Lion bugs - doesn't copy data and Lion needs 35GB more space on hard disk

Hi,

the following problems and bugs occured after installing Mac OS Lion on my MacBook Pro (Summer '09):

1. I had to change my iTunes password. Obviously, iTunes interpreted the re-installation after an unsuccessful upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion as if this was a different bought version. Now I have only 2 more devices left for using my iTunes password.

2. Lion needs ca. 35 GB more hard disk space than Snow Leopard although I copied the exact data from my external drives that I used to have on Snow Leopard (this observation is confirmed by 4 friends of mine who upgraded to Lion).

3. When I copy data (music, documents, pics, movies etc.) from by backup disks to my lion folders (like "movies", "photos", "music") the whole data vanishes (although the available hard disk space drops in that very moment by the exact size of the data I want to copy).

4. Apple Mail of Lion doesn't accept my Snow Leopard Mail data. It imports all my mails but afterwards Apple Mail is terribly slow and some Mails are missing.

Can anybody provide help for these problems?

At the moment I am thinking about downgrading to Snow Leopard. I have to warn everybody of upgrading to Lion as the new 10.7 has immense bugs and problems integrated.

1. It's strange that you had to authorize your computer as a new machine. That should not have happened. But don't worry about the number of authorizations remaining. Once all 5 are in use, you can choose to deauthorze ALL computers currently authorized, then re-authorize only those computers you actually still own/use. You can't do this until all 5 authorizations are in use, and you can do it only once per year.

2. Seems like a lot. I think my hard drive's free space declined by about 10gb. But so what? How is this a problem unless you have a tiny and nearly-full hard drive?

3. What do you mean it vanishes? Sounds like you have a permissions issue. Boot into the recovery volume, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk and Repair Permissions routines on your Lion boot volume.

4. Spotlight might still be indexing. Have patience.

If you're unhappy with Lion, restore from your last full backup. Wait for 10.7.1 or later, which many people have chosen to do. Or you could try installing Lion again - I'm having no trouble on my Macs.

None of this sounds like bugs. It sounds like something was wrong with your machine, possibly a corrupt hard drive, and it caused the first installation to fail. I'm guessing that you didn't do much troubleshooting, and just tried a second time... is that correct? If so, that's likely the cause of your issues. You may want to consider a "clean" install at this point, though that will be difficult to do unless you knew to keep a copy of the installer. If you did do that, create a boot volume from that installer:

As to the iTunes thing, note that you can deauthorize all computers you have authorized in iTunes. You can only do that once per year (to prevent abuse I guess?), so don't do it frivolously, but if you want to do that go to iTunes and choose Store -> View My Account. Enter your password, and then click the Deauthorize All button:

Then you just have to re-authorize any computers using your iTunes account.
