Mail doesn't use the system-wide auto-correct like most other apps. Seems like a stupid thing to forget. A highly-touted new feature that doesn't work in a highly-touted new Mail.app version...

Exactly as I originally posted....
Open TextEdit. Type "cant" and it will auto-correct it to "can't".
Open Mail, start a new message. Type "cant" and it will leave it as "cant" with a red underline.

Mail in Lion is not using auto-correct for me, either. There doesn't seem to be an isoltaed preference for it in Mail, and it's selected in the System Preferences Language & Text settings. Stumped.

OK, I figured it out... And I feel really stupid.
For some reason, the option is turned off by default...
Menu > Edit > Spelling & Grammar > Check Spelling Automatically
Simple as that.
I thought I had looked there before I posted, but I guess I missed it.
Side Note > Somehow, this fancy text edit box on this page does neither the red line nor the blue line, lol
Still not working for me. I already had that checked & still no auto-correct. Any other ideas?
Figured it out...if anyone has trouble getting auto-correct to work in Mail, uncheck & then recheck the option in the Spelling & Grammar menu that Andrew Mcvinnie mentioned above. Should be good to go.
