Q: Screen recording won't export

You can play your edited material and record it again using quicktime so you have it in an unclipped savable format. Its not ideal due to sound quality degradation but a workaround.

This bug is a real pain. We were going to produce training materials but think we may have to switch to something else... Probably VirtualBox-WinXP-CamStudio

As of today - July 1st, 2013 - the "SPLIT" NO-EXPORT BUG STILL EXISTS!

I am amazed Apple has not addressed this yet! I have the Quicktime 10.1 with OS 10.7.5. I tried doing some simple editing some pieces of a larger clip into something smaller by "splitting the clip" - just as something quick I could then export to YouTube. Who wants to have to upload a while video into iMovie and go through all of that just for a little edit.

Thought quicktime would help but, NOT! Received the same "Operation Not Supported" error everyone else has described here. After reading some of the posts here I was able to discover that if you use the "trim" function, then yes you can trim a clip and then Export that as you like. But, using the "Split" function stops you dead as far as exporting which is sad as it seems to be the most helpful and accurate in Quicktime as you can split several times, delete what you don't want, and then "in theory" export what's left.

C"mon Apple! Wake up over there!!!

I'm having the exact same issues. A quick fix, which is still a huge pain: The temp files are stored in -->
Library/Containers/com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX/Data/Library/Autosave Information/

If you go into that folder you can just copy the file out. However, this is pretty useless as it the file will not upload to YouTube because YouTube says the "File type is unsupported" and if you try to resave the file in QuickTime you run into the same error.

APPLE PLEASE FIX YOUR PRODUCT!!

How Frustrating!!!

There goes my afternoon.  Can't save, can't export, what a drag.

Ugh.  Back to Windows and upside down iphone clips.

Actually, this tip got me halfway to a workable solution.

First off, finding the file (I did a general search for the term "unsaved" and found a Quicktime file that was the temporary file I was looking for. I then copied that file to my desktop to ensure that it didn't disappear once I closed out Quicktime without saving (remember, Quicktime wouldn't allow me to save OR export the file).

Once I had the file, I opened Get Info by right-clicking on the file and removed the file extension. That changed the file into a folder.

Inside the folder was the full screen recording in .mov format. From there, I was able to open it in anything - Premiere, Handbrake, Camtasia, whatever.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!

To reiterate the solution:

Problem: QT screen recording that will not save:

1. Go to:

2. Copy that file (command d) and then move to desktop to ensure that it does not disappear once I closed out Quicktime without saving (remember, Quicktime wouldn't allow me to save OR export the file). (You will see and 'unsaved....' file there on this date.)

3. Once I had the file, I opened Get Info by right-clicking on the file and removed the file extension - in the field called: Name & Extension:’ box. (delete the .qtpxcomposition ) That changed the file into a folder.

I also had the same/similar issue. After a couple hours of editing (trimming/splitting) QuickTime didn't let me save my screencast. I tried exporting to Facebook and all I got in return was QT hanging up on me. I had to force quit it.

But before I force quit the application, thanks to LEBRUF (whoohoo!!!) I was able to locate the autosaved file and made 2 copies to my desktop. But in contrast to his good luck, after I changed the file extension of one of the copies, there was no .mov file waiting for me. However, I reopened QT again and was able to open the second copy of the autosaved file I made (it had a really long extension) and voila..... there was my screencast. I am currently trying to export to 480. I wonder if it will come out.....

Finally figured it out - apparently the Movies folder in my home directory had a weird permission set on it and things couldn't be written to it, which caused QuickTime to give a very descriptive message "The operation could not be completed" and saving to a different folder (or after fixing the permissions on Movies), worked.

This might be the solution to the bug. I had same issue... no Save and no Export possible.

What I did was use the share icon in QuickTime control bar. It's the box w/arrow up all the way to the right, above the time remaining indicator.

The share option that worked for me was "Messages" and I "Messaged" the video to myself.

After it sent, I was able to right click, copy, and paste the video into folder.

Long *** name on that sucker!

Renamed and was then able to use at will.
