How can I disable auto correct in Safari? I edit HTML and CSS all day in a WYSIWYG editor and it keeps correcting and replacing all my tags. Even when I just open a file, make one change, it'll auto correct all instances of "center" to "centre" for example and it's extremely frustrating. I've looked in preferences and there seems to be no option to disable this annoyingly persistent problem.
I've gone back to Snow Leopard so I am telling you this from memory. Anyhow, go into System Preferences and click on the link for spelling. There will be a check box to disable system wide spell checking. Uncheck that, and you should be rid of that problem.

Thank you so much! With all the problems with Lion, I too will be rolling back to Snow Leopard. Just can't use this software in a production environment. Laggy, and only being able to make use of one screen with full screen apps rendering my second screen useless. Not sure why they released so early with so many issues...
Actually, I disabled it in system preferences but it's STILL auto correcting me! What the ....?!?!
In the "Language & Text" tab under "text" there is a link for "Correct Spelling Automatically". I think I sent you to the wrong setting in my first post.
Yep, that's the one I unticked. But it is still doing it.
FIre up TextEdit and try it in there and make sure that it is off there. If it is, then it is a Safari thing and will likely be in Safari's preferences under "Auto Fill"
All Auto Fill options in Safari are switched off. And yes, it's not working in Text Edit. There are no preferences in Safari for Auto Correct that I can see. Why, Apple, why?!
I've finally found how to disable the auto-correction in Apple Lion Safari, from Edit > Spelling and Grammer > Check Spelling Automatically.

Hmph - lots of annoyance so far - and nothing I love about it…
I've also discovered in Safari that the fields are different. For example: if you put your cursor in the url field and uncheck the spelling correction, the field in the search bar will still be checked.
I've kind of got used to the auto-correction now, I think Apple needs to put a global setting in either Safari Preferences or Keyboard Preferences maybe?

It means that your cursor has to be in a box where text can be written (like address bar in safari or in the "google search" bar)
If you're not, you wont be able to uncheck the option 🙂
Thanks, you saved my day. I was totally fed up with Safari changing my spellings to British when I had deliberately used American. Software vendors need to treat their users with more respect.
