Changing Screen Name in AIM on .mac account?

It is not possible to change the screen name of a .mac or AIM account you've already created except for changing spacing and capitalization. You need to create a new account if you want a shorter screen name.

I think that how your name shows up on your friend's end is a function of how they have you entered into their Address Book.

For example, on one computer, I have an Address Book entry for my Dad where I've set his full name to "My Dad" and on another computer, I have him entered as "Steve Jobs" (kidding). Both Address Book entries use the same AIM screen name (or in your case, .mac account), but display the different names in iChat. My Dad can't alter either of these values.

It's not quite like MSN Messenger where you get to control your display name and how you appear in your friend's buddy list.

It also true at your end.
Click on your name next to your Buddy pic at the top of the Buddy list and it will toggle between the account name you are logged in with and the "Real Name " you have given yourself in the Address Book Me Card.

This Real Name is not broadcast unless your screen name is very close like the original poster reported.
