Unable to install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (1.09 GB) - disk image not recognized.

Hello.

I am just writing in connection with the above in order to check whether other users have been experiencing a similar problem.

Effectively, I have recently downloaded from Apple's website the new 10.6.8 combo update v.1.1 (1.09 GB) and when attempting to open the image got a warning stating:

"The following disk images could not be opened. Reason: not recognized."

Has anyone experienced the same problem or am I experiencing an isolated problem?

I have always been applying all the previous combo updates in the past without problems. Strangely enough, I have downloaded the 10.6.8 update v.1.1 (NOT combo, 453.55 MB) and it opens correctly. However, I would like to reinstall soon Snow Leopard (not upgrading to Lion yet) and thus getting the combo update working would be ace.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Just replying to myself, really...

I have managed to get the combo update image working when downloaded from Apple via Macupdate. Bizarre!...

But happily working. 😁

Thanks anyway and my apologies for a somewhat surreal technical hiatus.

Cheers from Scotland!

Yep, Apple has screwed up YET AGAIN.

Anything vaguely related to the OS 10.7 Lion upgrade appears to be jinxed or poorly prepared. The flood of problems listed on the 10.7 forum is ample testament.

After a disastrous series of attempts to upgrade from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8, which rendered the new-ish MBP useless and unbootable every time, I rebuilt it to 10.6.7 and there it will stay forever unfortunately, not only due to the aforesaid upgrade problems but because Apple has decided that we have all had long enough to upgrade everything else and has discontinued Rosetta. At a single stroke Apple will have disabled a good 50% of my legally purchased software and at less than ten months old my MBP has become a dinosaur.

So much for being an 'Apple Individualist', like their 1984 promo would have us fondly believe.

I tried downloading it with a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and an iMac running Leopard. Neither worked. Both resulted in the 'not recognised' error.

So let me get this right. In order to update to Lion - which I never will - you need the 10.6.8 update for your Snow Leopard computer. But you cannot get it without having Lion in the first place.

Ahh. I get it. We have to go and buy a new computer with Lion pre-installed so that we can update the Snow Leopard one.

In my experiences, it's totally random. What I mean is: the combo update downloaded from some locations/providers is the correct one (10.9GB), the very same combo update downloaded from other locations/providers is the flawed one (10.7GB). For no apparent reason.

Since I managed to get the correct .dmg, I just uploaded it on dropbox to the benefit of any other SL user with the same problem as me.
