mac book pro wont load

gday guys,

my sister got a macbook pro for christmas a year and a half ago (2009) and after a year it stopped working. by this i mean that it has the apple startup screen but it wont go any further, it just never loads. im pretty sure she had applecare but she is very lazy and threw everthing out not too long after buying the computer so all of the info and software disks are long gone. is there a way i can get this fixed for free easily? i would like to get it running tonight if possible.
