No iDVD in my new macbook air. Is it normal?

Has anyone tried dtoitn's solution above? Besides me, that is?

How to install iDVD from the Internet

Download and install Pacifist from Charlessoft ($20 shareware):

Pacifist is a install package extractor.

Download an iDVD upgrade package from Apple (free):

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1353

When installing the upgrade package you will get an error saying the you have no qualifying application installed.

Do the following:

Use Pacifist to extract the iDVD.app file from the upgrade package to your Applications folder.

If you try to use iDVD now it will complain about missing themes.

First install some free themes from here: http://dvdthemepak.com/

If you open iDVD now you will see some gray themes below those you installed. Click on one. iDVD will update itself. Afterwards click on one of the gray themes again. iDVD will download those themes. (> 500 MB)

For those who prefer to drone on about something no one here can change, go ahead.

In my opinion Apple made a mistake by not including iDVD with new computers. And I bet that most of the people working customer support would agree with me, though they can't possibly say so aloud. Luckily, there are ways around the problem. If I recently bought a new computer, and gave Apple more than a thousand dollars, I personally would not consider it unethical to resolve the problem myself. I think Jobs would agree with me; definitely the Jobs from the "blue box" era would agree with me.

To be a little clearer, I meant that I would not find it unethical to sail the seas of the internet seeking treasures and an alternative way to obtain iDVD. I don't think Jobs would object. If he did, your get-out-of-jail card is to say "blue box".

That method works for iWeb also except there's no themes to install separately.

So Apple is now not selling the old iLife suite with iDVD. I did the run around posted from the wonderful techie person previously, and it worked well. My suggestion, after talking to three different people at Apple today, is to use this direct customer service number and voice your concerns about no iDVD. (408) 996-1010. Maybe if enough voices speak, they will listen.

Thank you for your post! I just bought a new MBP and was shocked and disappointed when I was told by 2 apple techs to research a third party app to burn slideshows and movies to which I replied I can buy a $300 Windows machine and burn DVDs all day. It comes across very arrogant for Apple to just take it away..thanks again...

FYI...Apple confirmed they no longer sell ilife DVDs to get idvd. They told me you would need to find it third party. dtoitn's method is the way to go.

iDVD is easy to buy.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD. I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others. None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.

With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.

IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.

So what about if I buy the old version of Ilife from Amazon- it should have i DVD on it ?

This is so frustrating- I specifically bought the Mac Aire in September to take on a photography trip with the intention of making DVD sthat can be pplayed on computers and TV .

No need to fret. If you specifically want idvd then you have a few options:

1. Following the instructions at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213855?answerId=16174085022#16174085022

I did that and it worked great. Very easy.

2. Buy off of ebay or somewhere else.

3. Buy something like Toast.

A lot of DVD players will play movies that are exported from imovie so you may not even need idvd.

Imovie does not burn though. I can burn from Aperture but the movie making tools in imovie are better.

You would export the movie to a file and then burn it in the Filer.
