Q: my emac has suddenly started to go really slow, is there anything I can do to test what is wrong, I've checked the broadband speed and that seems fine, though I'm pretty sure it's mostly only slow during web based actions, and when I say slow, I mean dead

I've tested the download speed and it's normal but I still suspect it's web related because when I use

programs like WORD etc it seems normal, but when I'm on the web it's like molasses slow.

Is there anything else that would slow down web activities other than download speed and how

can I check them?

Is there anything I can check on my emac that might be doing it.

This started happening suddenly, it's recent, like 3 or 4 days since it started but it's really

frustrating.

emac, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Run disk utility on your hard drive to verify/repair, also repair your permissions.  You can also reset Safari by clicking on the Safari menu then selecting reset Safari.  You check your download speed at a website like http://www.speedtest.net/

At this point I think you should get Applejack...

    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

    applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 6 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 6 things it does are...

    Correct any Disk problems.

    Repair Permissions.

    Clear out Cache Files.

    Repair/check several plist files.

Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

    Trash old Log files.

First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)

Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.

DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.

These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

    For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried it and the Verify failed so I re-loaded Leopard and that has got rid of the worst of the problem but it still seems very slow to load some web pages like this one for instance.
