Mail running +100% of my CPU!

People say that may Lion run slower an duse lot of ram at the beginning but about cou no sure?

So say install SL and Lion.how old is your mac?May is good idea update the ram because Lion like ram a lot,you can get it in a apple store and they can change it for you.I am no sure if i answer your question.

That's my CPU and ram use with itunes running a live even,mail open and safari for right you,also i have opeb twitter,skype,ichat and activity monitor and connect a external drive..

I have the same problem. It happens to me when I leave the mailer open for a long time.

I'm not sure if this has to do anything with the attachments.

Same issue here. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with 2.3 GHz i7 processor and Mail is running 100% of the processor and is slooooooow. I upgraded from SL and mail was fine before. Now it is horrible.

Same here, Mail is using over 100% of CPU time. RSS is irritatingly slow now - almost unusable.

Same here, Mail using 50% CPU (dual core ...), no Mobile Me, no RSS ... and cpu occupation beginning when checking mails (many accounts, POP, IMAP ...). No other lasting processes in Activity Monitor, the check of mailboxes ended correctly (seen in Windows>Activity).

I have exactly the same problem. Mac Mail is now effectively unusable on #Lion. This is KILLING my productivity.

I fixed this issue, albeit, not in an elegant manner. In my frustration with the new mail, I tried to copy the binaries and dylibs (otool -L) for the snow leopard version of mail to my lion install. It eventually worked after finding all the correct dylibs. However, it crashed frequently, and I had to revert back to lion's mail. When lion's mail was re-opened, it re-imported all my mail and the issue disappeared.

I know this isn't a solution isn't pretty. If you try this, be sure to make backups of everything.

I was having the same issue with mail as well. I thought mail was slowing down my system. I then found this thread.

Run it in 32 bit mode, that usually fixes these problems.

I've done the verify disk process: there was nothing that needed fixing. There were some permissions that needed fixing however, and that was completed. However, the is no change in Mail's horrendous performance, and my cpu's / and system are still running hot.

It's likely that this is the new Mail.app reindexing the mailbox. Have you let this run to see how long it continues and if it eventually stops?

I don't think that is the problem: I've had Lion since the first day of release, and the machine (MacBook 5,1; 4 Gb RAM) runs 24/7 - note that I've rebooted a few times to recover from hard lockups cause by Chrome.

Run Mail in 32-bit mode by selecting it and pressing CMD+i then choosing 32-bit mode.

32-bit mode doesn't seem to change the amount of CPU time being used - still in the 110+% range when browsing - very slowly - through RSS feeds in Mail. Each message seems to take seconds to load, unlike SL which seemed to take milliseconds..... Unworkable.

Interestingly, the MS Outlook client reads mail messages faster than Mail does.
