while extracting file during restore, device disappear from iTunes; then error message "device cannot be found" pop up

After failing to update iphone OS, now iphone is in restore mode

Device Manager recognize USB is connected to iphone with Location: Location 0 (Apple Mobile device (recovery mode))

IPhone in "connect to itunes" screen

After connect to itunes, message "itunes has detected iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes." appear.

In Device -> iphone screen, after clicking "Restore" button, itunes status become "Extracting software..."

During extracting software process, iPhone change from "connect to itunes" screen to just "apple logo", then go back to "connect to itunes" screen; but at the same time device-iphone disappear from itunes; once itunes complete extracting software, error message comes out "The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. The device cannot be found"

Tried again few times with all USB device removed & turn off all the anti-virus software and all other non window / non-apple softwares; but same thing happened.

so now I'm stuck.... please help.

I can get the "connect to itunes" while my device is plugged into a wall plug, but not while plugged into my laptop, when i unplug from the wall i lose that message. I can get itunes to recognise my device and i'm able to click "restore". Itunes extracts the files then comes to "waiting for iphone", then i get a disconnection sound from my laptop. So annoying

after reading loads of forum, I didn't find anyone with the exact issue as mine. But I've followed some of the restore issue solution and now I've fixed my phone. Yeah! maybe not all the steps are necessary, but here was what I've done to fix it:

1. update itunes

2. Ensure Apple Mobile device driver is updated and work (i.e. iphones is detected in device manager)

3. run "msconfig", ensure all other non microsoft / non apple softwares are off

- Services: only enable all microsoft services, apple mobile device and bonjour service

- Startup: only enable QTTask & iTunesHelper

4. Restart computer

5 turn on itunes

6. connect iphones via USB.

7. itunes show iphone in device column, but iphone still stay in "connect to itunes" screen

8. Hold Sleep button + Home button until the screen goes dark (iphone disappear from itunes device column at the same time), then just keep holding the home button (without holding the sleep button)

9. first time, though itunes showa iphone in the device column again, but iphone screen go from apple icon straight to "connect to itunes" screen and stay there again.

10. I repeat step 8, this time though itunes show iphone in the device column again, but the iphone screen stay dark showing nothing (instead of showing "connect to iTunes" screen)

11. then I click restore in itunes, this time it manages to finish extracting software without iphone restarting itself during the process; itunes find the iphone and complete the restore.

12. As I do backup all the time, now I just need to sync all the files / setting back to iphone, everything back to normal again.

still not sure what happened to my phone, but now it's fix =>

I didn't got it! Do you mean I should disable all the other options and enable "Microsoft Serveces" option which I didn't really found there! I see the "Apple Mobile device and bounjour Services" but not that microsoft thing.

- Services: only enable all microsoft services, apple mobile device and bonjour service

- Startup: only enable QTTask & iTunesHelper

Please explain it. I am really in trouble!

Hello Good people, Marcus Mouse here 🙂.

i also had the same problem as mentioned above, well the solution is to recover your device in DFU Mode instead of recovery Mode.

This is how to achieve DFU mode. You can do it on every iPhone, iPod and iPad:

Method 1)

  • Attach the phone to the pc
  • Turn the phone off
  • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
  • Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
  • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

Having problems? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds, then 8, then 7. It’s a tricky timing but you will eventually get it.

Method 2)

  • Hook up the phone powered on to the PC
  • Now hold home / power until the phone turns off and keep holding for 10 seconds. If the phone ever turns on during this phase, start over and hold for less time.
  • Now release power and continue holding home until the PC recognizes the phone.
  • I don’t like this method as much because there are “rumors” that it may cause some 1604 errors in the restore. I am not convinced of that though.

Method 3)

  • Attach the phone to the pc
  • Turn the phone off
  • Press and hold power. Keep holding power. As soon as you see display on the screen of any sort press and hold home.

Have MAC OSX 10.5.6 or aMAC Book slim? You have a problem entering DFU mode. Here is an easy fix from the dev-team blog:

  1. You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only acrobat download sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future – http://developer.apple.com/mac/
  2. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily Log release for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33″ (yes, that is a 5 in 10.5.5 – this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
  3. Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
  4. Reboot your system!

Hope this was helpful.

Good Day 😊.

My iPhone 6 was stuck in recovery mode (connect to itunes screen - itunes logo with iphone cable), this was due to updating to iOs 10 via wifi and then battery going dead!

iTunes recognised the iPhone, selecting Update or Restore would end in error.

First try softwarw such as ReiBoot, wondershare, iReb

Here was my solution after days of attempts:

- Download IPSW software from 3rd party website, latest version for your iPhone should do as you will not be able to recover data on phone. You will be able to sync from iTunes backup later

- Place this file in C:\Users\**YOURUSERNAME**\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

- Return to iTunes and connect iPhone

- Put iPhone into DFU mode (google method) - iTunes should still have iPhone recognised

- Shift click Restore and then select the IPSW file

- This should now being Restore process and your iPhone should work after this

If this does not work or this ends after timeout/15mins:

Disable firewall/spyware

Ensure iTunes is latest version

Try another PC/Laptop which is faster - This is the method which eventually worked for me!!

I then synced the app data from my iTunes, which was 3 weeks old. You will then have to allow your iPhone to download the actually apps seperately as backup only saves app Data.

p.s. This shows backup your iphone weekly minimum and you will have no issues incase your iPhone is bricked!!

while extracting file during restore, device disappear from iTunes; then error message "device cannot be found" pop up
