Can't install Final Cut Studio 2 because "PowerPC applications are no longer supported"

Bought a brand new 15" MacBookPro OS X 10.7 2.2Ghz Intel Core i7 and tried to install Final Cut Studio 2. Got the error message "You can't open the application FinalCutStudio.mpkg because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Oh no, does this mean I have to spend more money!???

The machine has LION installed, right? 10.7? Well, the installer, just the installer, for FCS2 (FCP 6) isn't Intel native...it is PowerPC, and that requires ROSETTA. And ROSETTA is not part of Lion.

So you cannot install FCS2 onto a machine running Lion. You could install FCS3, if it were available, but it isn't. Your only choice now is FCP X. Which is cheap, but you cannot bring in any old FCP 6 projects into it.

Stinks...

I'd like to provide an update on this situation in case anyone is in the same boat I am.

I went to the Apple store today. I asked if I could downgrade my operating system. They said no, since it came pre-installed with Lion. I asked if Final Cut Studio 3 was compatible with Lion. They said yes, for the most part. They said there was an issue exporting video in 1080p.

Of course, conveniently Apple is no longer selling FCS3 and the ones on Ebay I saw have gone up to more than $650 a copy. I am out $400 for stupidly buying FCS2 a few months ago, which is now useless to me. I told the Apple guy that I'm not buying FCS X until they work out all the kinks. This leaves me with this laptop that I bought for video editing with no editing software to use.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually considering getting Premiere Pro now for Apple, which is supported in Lion and is running a deal for 50% off. (http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/faq.html#lion-os) If Apple doesn't start selling FCS 3 again, they are really not giving me any choice but to switch!

work around: (found it online, seems to work fine so far).

I think it's only the installer that presents a problem...

Get Mac OS10.6 (Snow Leopard) (less than 50$), and install only optional installs. In the package you'll find Rosetta and Quicktime 7 (also usefull). Ignore the rest.

After installing Rosetta you're able to install FCS2 without any problems. I haven't tried creating a project yet, but FCS2 opens as usual and seems to be functional.

Havn't tried to deinstall Rosetta (never change a running system.... *g*), but I think FC should still work.

Interesting... so if you are only installing Rosetta and Quicktime with the Snow Leopard disc are you still technically using the Lion operating system? I've never installed an operating system before. Do I need to do anything before putting the disc in? (it's a new machine so I don't have any files on it yet)

This solution worked AMAZING for me!

I purchased FCS2 from Amazon and had Lion installed on a new machine but it came preinstalled with SL so I installed the optional content suggested with Rosetta and QT7... VOILA!!!!! WORKED LIKE A CHARM.

Thank you for saving this single mom with a film school daughter from having to spend 1300.00 on a new version for nothing.

The Machine we have is a MacBookPro (newest avail) it was hard enough to pay 3200.00 for that but add the expense of the FC products new and we are SOL.

Gotta love support forums... I learned more here than from an Apple Rep.. they had no idea this could be done 🙂

Thanks again Miralys!

Hi Maylyn,

You may have resolved this already but if I were you I would...

1. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable copy of your new Mac hard drive on an external HD. (So you can restore your computer to as new if ever needed and without paying to upgrade in the future).

2. Connect your mac to another mac in 'file transfer mode' and wipe the drive completely using disk utility, then install a fresh copy of snow leopard and enjoy your final cut studio 2 etc.

Note: This will give you the best compatibility and if you can live without the gimmick features of Lion, why not, until the bugs are all fixed!!!?!

Note: To do this you will need - access to another mac, an external HD and a full copy of snow leopard.
