Using Canon Elura 100 with iMovie

Help, I successfully imported one video from my Canon Elura 100 camcorder, but I can't do it again with another tape. I've checked the connecting cable on both ends, restarted the camera and iMovie several times, but the only camera that shows up is the built-in face time camera.

Help! I'm new to the Mac world!

Why did importing work once? Why isn't it working again? What can I do to rectify this?

iMac OS X 10.6.8

iMovie 11 9.0.4

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Read your request. Most of the time, in my experience... This is probably a simple trouble shoot... you wrote, "I've checked the connecting cable on both ends, restarted the camera and iMovie several times." Good stuff now try unpluggin the camera from the Mac, and then restarting the computer over..., not sure if you went that far, then go about opening the program first, and then pluggin your camcorder back in to the computer, it should recognize. If not check your camcorder manual for any "must do" processes before use... Hope this helps...

It's always good practice to make sure the camera is powered by AC power and not running off the battery. Make sure the cables are plugged in correctly...unplug and replug both ends. Make sure the camera is in playback mode. Restart as mention by Jamesfromfortwaltonbeach, start up iMovie and let it completely load and then plug in your firewire.

Then there is always the off chance that the cable somehow got damaged.

Thanks...

I now feel pretty stupid and hang my head in shame. This is a brand new computer and it's in my pooly lit office. I didn't think it was possible to push the firewire 800 connection into the wrong plug, but I now know that it does fit into the network plug. In the light of day, I turned my iMac 180° and discovered that the firewire cable was inserted in the wrong spot.

IT ACTUALLY FIT!

It's amazing... the computer connected perfectly once the plug was put in the right hole! Who woulda guessed.

There's a blunder I won't make again.

Thanks for your help. It inspired me to look closer at the connections on the back of my new Mac.

I was a Windows guy for 20+ years, but after 2 weeks with this new computer, I know that I'm a Mac guy from now on.

How did you get the Elura 100 to work in the first place? I can't even get my MBP(os x 10.6.8) to communicate with it and I am using the same OS you are using. All I get is "Unable to list FireWire devices". I have looked all over these communities and no one has a solution that works. My MBP sees that it is there because it gives that error message only when I plug the Elura 100 in. When I plug in a WD HDD it sees and communicates with it. It just won't communicate with the Elura.

Hey Steve,

I wish I had a better answer for you but I really don't. It's rather embarrassing, but as I wrote to RHM7069 above: after turning my new iMac around, I discovered that I had my firewire connector plugged into the wrong port on the back of the computer. I didn't think that was even possible, but it felt like a good connection. Once I plugged the connecting cable (NOT the USB connection) into the firewire port instead of having it hanging in the lightning port or whatever it was... everything worked fine.

Plug the camera into the proper port. Launch iMovie or your video editor. Fire up the camera. And with the software, import the video content from the camera.

You MUST use a firewire connector and NOT a USB to transfer video. USB will transfer data only from the SD card.

There are a lot of people in these communities trying to find a solution to this. I also have an iMAC using OS X 10.6.8 and it gives the same error as my MBP. I am wondering what you have installed in your iMAC that I don't. If you don't mind, I like to ask you to plug in your Camera, click on the "Apple icon" - "About This Mac" - "More Info" - "FireWire" and tell me what you see or if you can send a pic of it. There must be a driver or something that I am missing. I would really appreciate it whenever you have the time to do it.
