Same problem here with a 2010 MacBook Air. It's not actually the U2711 not waking, though, it's the MacBook Air freezing upon waking from sleep (at least that's what's happening here).

I talked to Apple support about this and the support rep said that I would need to test if the problem also occurs with an Apple LED Cinema Display. Since I'm using a non-Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable (Circuit Assembly) and a non-Apple monitor (the Dell U2711), there could be compatibility issues which, if so, would not be covered by Apple.

The strange thing is that this problem only surfaced after the update to Lion, so it's not necessarily a hardware issue and might even be fixed in a future Lion update. Then again, I don't think Apple will put much work into fixing incompatibilities with 3rd-party products...

I am also suffering from this problem. Three of us in the office all have Macbook Airs and Dell 27" U2711 monitors. Two of us get constant freezing and the third gets sporatic freezing. So frustrating! Hope someone can update this with some answers.

We checked out the InsomniaT issue and that doesn't seem to be the culprit. I really don't want to do a clean install of Lion and to see if the problem still persists but when the computer freezes, it's a total freeze. No entries in the logs, nothing to do but hold down the power button to power off.

This seems highly unlikely as the U2711 have always worked in Lion but what kind of adapter are you using? I have the MDP to DP from monoprice. There is another Apple FAQ here that says the cable might be the culprit:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3533

Don't know why the cable would work in SL and not in Lion but maybe they tweaked the driver for "less tolerance". Doesn't seem to make sense but want to know either:

1. Confirm that everyone has a NON-Apple doggle or an apple doggle.

2. See if there is anyone out there that successfully uses the U2711 with Mac Lion.

So far all reports of this problem say that it started happening with Lion and didn't happen in SL.

I'm using a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable from Circuit Assembly. AFAIK Apple doesn't offer this particular kind of cable. At least I couldn't find anything in the online store. The only MiniDP-adapters they offer are for DVI and HDMI, as far as I can see.

To me this still sounds like it's a software problem in Lion. But, as you said, it could indeed still be the cable. The only problem is that we won't be able to test an official cable from Apple, as their doesn't seem to be one. And I can more or less rule out a faulty cable, as I have two of them and tried both. Of course it's possible that this particular cable has a design flaw, but that still leaves the question why it works under SL.

Im suprised to hear that it actually was working for you all in Snow Leopard. I have had this problem with my U3011 since the day I got it. And guess what, this doesn't just affect Macs, but Dells, Lenovos, and other PCs of all sorts. I would put my money Dell firmware being the culprit, however I encourage any and all solutions from we Apple users!

If the monitor is the culprit, I think we're out of luck. In their Monitors subforum FAQ Dell says that they don't test their monitors with Apple products and they even acknowledge that there might be a problem:

By the way, one solution mentioned in several threads on Dell forums is to disable DDC/CI. Didn't do anything for me.

Same problem for me,

Late 2010 MBA 11" connected to a Dell U2711 via a mini DP to DP cable.

- Worked fine with a Moshi mDP to HDMI @ 1080p

- System hangs coming out of sleep using the mini DP to DP cable.

- System hangs when pulling out the mini DP cable, need to shutdown to disconnect.

- System has hung on the odd occasion of connecting the mini DP cable, but not always.

- Drives the display great @ 2560x1440, image great, performance fine. just stability on sleep and connect / disconnect is a killer. I'm pretty bummed about this at the moment.

Updated to Lion 10.7.1 latest update. No improvement.

Issue did not occur when running SL.

I think we need to attempt to log another support case and get this looked into. Sounds like the first attempt got roadblocked a little. But im going to try and get something logged and worked on as well.

I suggest you guys give apple a bell and try and get this looked into, more of us that call the more of a chance this will end up fixed in the next update.

Same problem here.

Early 2013 Macbook Pro + Dell U2711.

Upon waking, sometimes brightness keys do not repspond when connected to Dell U2711 monitor via mini display port to display port.

Also, if I shut the Dell off before putting the Macbook to sleep, the Dell sometimes won't turn on unless I unplug it for 1 minute.

Trying to solve this for a few months but nothing... 3 different mini display port to display portcables and all the same problem.

Anyone have the key? 🙂
