Q: Can't install devices through "my devices" web interface?

Each time I try to add a device to my lion server (on a mac mini) I get the error "The profile “Device Enrollment (com.apple.ota.media-server.local.bootstrap)” could not be installed due to an unexpected error."  I have tried turning the profile manager on and off, and changing from a simple local network to a private network with VPN and back to a simple local network.  No matter what I get this error on my macs, and I get an SCEP error at the end of the profile installation on an iOS device.   Anybody have any ideas how I get this reset?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7)

Another small update (probably more of a bump).

I manually added my iMac that I want to connect to the server as a "placeholder".  Since then when I try to install the iMac it gets a little father and asks about the SCEP server and another configuration, but then fails again with the same message.  Going to try to tinker with more of the manual settings in the "placeholder" profile and see if I can find something that helps.  It does register that the iMac connected with the server, but it is clear that it is not complete.

    Hi All,

I got around the "...could not be installed due to an unexpected error." issue by going to the Directory Services app and enabling root. Then logging in as root and installing the profiles. After doing this, the profiles and updates work without any issues so far.

I'm guessing that it's a permissions issue. if you are squimish about enabling root, you could try fixing permissions first, before attempting to install profiles, to see if that works. Have not tried that way yet.

I was getting this error on every machine (7 Macs) until I discovered this.

Ok i also had this issue here is what worked for me. In profilemanager make an placeholder with the info and serialnumber. Here is the catch !! the hostname must be in full you can get this in a terminal screen by typing hostname. it will return something like MacBookPro.local  use this in full so with .local. Hope it helps some people.

This is sad that I can't find a fix for this. I have tried everything listed in this thread with no luck. I'll keep checking back in.

spekkie:  what do you mean by "make a placeholder in profilemanager".  In the web application or the server app?  Thanks.

Route port 1640 to your OS X Lion Server on your router. This should address the problem.

"There is no reason why I should need a SSL Certificate for an in-house media server controlling 3 home computers, 2 iPhones, and 2 iPads that isn't serving outside of the home network."

OK, no. This whole system depends on SSL certificates. You can use self-signed certs, but you NEED certs. Its how your managed devices trust what profile manager is sending to them.

After wasting a half day, I have a new solution for this.  I posted it in another thread on this problem, here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15860582

(I'm cross posting because I read each and every one of these threads today, and I was frustrated that I couldn't find the solution).
