Grapher crashing when trying to solve differential equation

I've noticed a strange behavious when integrating using grapher, for example when integrating from 0 to x x^2 I get a non-continous graph (seems to be an integration error) and when I try to solve a differential equation (first and second order) it instantly crashes.

Anyone noticing similar behaviour?

I tried deleting preferences and Caches but I'm having the same problem.

Same problem here.

I switched to SpaceTime.

Unfortunately OS X and iOS versions are paid while Win is free, and UI is not so intuitive as in the Grapher.

I wish Apple fix bugs and push the development of the Grapher forward as it is excellent tool.

Hi Brethil,

1) Did you try the Grapher examples 2D "Differential Equations" and 3D "Lorenz'Attractor", are they OK ?

2) In new 2D and 3D Grapher windows enter the same differential equations as above, what happens ?

I'll enjoy trying Grapher 2.2 files .gcx.zip with your own not working equations in order :

- to check compatibility with Grapher 2.1 (Snow Leopard) ;

- to add if necessary a new bug in my Grapher bug list.

My e-mail address is available on this website.

Thanks to you,

Bonjour Daniele,

Does It looks like this :

" Bug nr. 23. (Grapher 2.0).

nth derivatives of functions : there was no limit for n in Curvus Pro X 1.3.2 or Grapher 1.1. Unfortunately Grapher 2.0 recognize the first derivatives only, y' dy/dx ; y'' y''' d^5/dx^5 can't be used anymore. First order differential equations only can be entered. Second order differential equations from menu Equation > New Equation from Template... > Differential Equation, are not accepted By Grapher 2.0.

THIS IS THE WORST BUG : NO REMEDY, REDUCING GREATLY GRAPHER'S CAPABILITY.

— Bug resolved in Grapher 2.1. (THIS IS GREAT ! ) "

I tried your "Harmonic oscillator", it's OK in Grapher 2.1 (Snow Leopard) the result is y = e exp x (e^x) and the curve is better in Euler method than in Runge Kutta 4 one (see Inspector).

About integrate x^2 from 0 to x : the curve is OK in Grapher 2.1 that is y = (x^3)/3.

I ll' be able to do more about "integrales", "equations differentielles" and new bugs around 10th August, my son will be here with his MacBook Pro OS X Lion.

So long

Yves

Here's a crashlog, it always happens when I try to solve a differential equation.

And here's the file with weird behaviour (which I forgot to attach before)

Thanks for replying,

Daniele

P.S. : I forgot to mention that I've been experiencing these problems only with Lion (it worked just fine before upgrading)

Hi Daniele,

Thanks for the .gcx file.

When opened in Grapher 2.1 I get the dotted curve for x<0.

If I repeat the same equation below yours, I get a perfect curve.

You discovered two new bugs in Grapher 2.2. Suggest you report to Apple (integration and differential equation).

I think I won't by OS X Lion because of those Grapher bugs and may be some other new ones still unknown. Grapher is an important application for me.

I am not clever enough to use the crashlog, it's a job for Apple's programmers.

Au revoir.

Hi Daniele,

1) Grapher 2.2 agrees same derivative syntax as in Grapher 2.1 since Lion update 10.7.2 : no more bug about y’ y’’ y’’’ etc.

2) Menu Equations / Integrate or equation " sum 0 to x dx f(x) " ; very easy to get the right curve for all x values : replace x by t (or any other but coordinate name) under the sign sum as

" sum 0 to x dt f(t) " Is it true in Lion 10.7.1 or only after 10.7.2 ? I don’t know.

So long,
