iTunes freezes when I try to sync iOS devices

This problem started about 6 weeks ago - I believe before iTunes 10.4 even came out. When I plug in either my iPhone 3GS or iPad 2 to sync, iTunes (Windows 64 bit) just freezes. The only way to unfreeze it is to unplug the device. Typically I have to restart iTunes several times, and/or connect, disconnect, and reconnect the device several times before I can get a device to sync. It makes no difference if I connect the device with iTunes running, connect the device to launch iTunes, or launch iTunes with the device already connected. I am always able to get the device to sync, eventually, but if I disconnect the device after syncing (e.g. iPad) and immediately connect the other device (e.g. iPhone) to sync, iTunes will freeze again. I'm fed up with this. This morning it took me 30 minutes of frustration to sync my iPad - a process that should take 30 seconds. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes but that didn't fix the problem. I've tried switching cables but that didn't fix the problem either. I have searched this forum and also the internet and have not found anybody having this exact issue. Help!

This is an iTunes conflict with Windows 7 SP1.

If you remove SP1 it will sync again (not reccomended though)

Also chances are if you remove your Antivirus program it will work aswell, as that will often exaserbate the issue (Really not reccomended though).

Alternatly you can run iTunes in Windows 7 or Windows Vista SP2 compatibility mode and it will sync most of the time without freezing (Opening iTunes first has better reliability with this method)

SP1 changed some aspects of how USB is handled, and iTunes is bugging out from it. Suprised there hasnt been a fix or atleast acknowledgment by now since the bug has been reported countless times since the SP1 beta. Just type "Sync Freeze" in the search at the top and you will see.

Here is the fix:

1. If frozen iTunes is open and iPhone is connected, right-click the task bar and select Start Task Manager.

2. Click on the Processes tab.

3. Look for the process distnoted.exe *32 entry.

4. Right-click and select End Process.

5. iTunes will now unfreeze.

6. Close iTunes and disconnect iPhone. Wait 15 seconds.

7. Reconnect iPhone. iTunes will launch automaticallly like it should and your iPhone will begin to sync like it should.

There appears to be an incompatibility issue with Apple's distnoted.exe process and maybe 64-bit OS's. All I know is that this works everytime although there doesn't appear to be a permanent fix to this issue. You may have to repeat these steps everytime you reboot your computer or update iTunes.

Thanks for the responses. I tried Windows 7 compatibility mode, and so far that seems to be working. I will say that it's ridiculous that Apple doesn't fix this. There have been at least two or three iTunes updates since SP1 was rolled out. Apple has had plenty of time to fix whatever issue with iTunes is causing this glitch. I'm VERY annoyed.

Ok, ive done a bit more testing on another fresh windows 7 x64 install, with no updates and bare minimum drivers iTunes syncs fine untill I installed an antivirus. I tested with Microsoft Security Essentials, but the same happened on fuly updated systems with Nod32 and Kaspersky. So it may actually have nothing to do with SP1 and everything to do with an iTunes update. That or 3 of the biggest AV's out there have simultaniously released updates that cripple iTunes.

I'm having the same problem. I have Kaspersky and with older versions of iTunes, as long as I disabled Kapersky and the Windows Firewall first, it worked fine (updated, synced, backed up, etc...) But having just updated to iTunes 10.4, even disabling Kapersky isn't working. ITunes is freezing at the 'backing up' stage for both my iPhone and iPad. Any wiz bang suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!
