Q: What happened to Save As?

I use pages for my work invoices and have a pretty comprehensive filing for previous invoices. The omission of 'save as' in the lion version of pages is extremely frustrating. Is there a work around? Will they fix this in the future or should I switch to a microsoft excel worksheet?

what about the versions?    that is if you type something leave it for 15 minutes while doing something else....does it still work as you said above? original still availble without the version changes being forced on me?

As far as I know, there are no changes to the AutoSave/Versioning part of the equation. What I was speaking to is the Save As process being invoked fairly soon after you make changes. I'm assuming that if you add words to a document and then don't touch it for a time, those changes will be Auto Saved, and you would have to go back via Versions to find the document in a state before you added those words.

Maybe someone who's had a chance to play with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 can do some further experimenting. I'm still on Snow Leopard at work, so I wouldn't be able to do this until later tonight.

I am happy that someone like me thinks SL is best system Apple ever produced. I hate Apple for not releasing 10.6.9 with iCLoud support. But after all.

    - I dont need to use iCLoud Dropbox will be enough. Some apps like iAWriter without iCloud are little cumbersome but i can live with this.

    - I learn to keep all my bought software installatio file in safe places. Some developers didnt put older version of their apps on websites so it can be tricky if you have snow leopard and need reinstall it for some reason and you lost your apps.

    - I believe that someone creates unsupported hacks to instal Snow on newer machines. Maybe it needs a tool to extract drivers for this newer machines and prepare install disk for Snow similar to creating XP install disc using nlite..

I really wish developers not produce their software Lion+. I buy as many apps as I can outside MAS also because MAS apps have limited functionality compared to their non-MAS versions sometimes.

I agree that SL is in many ways superior to ML.  Disabling the command-shif-F shortcut for find-by-file-name is the work of an idiot in the original sense of the word:  it involves a cognative and a moral failure.  The moral failing arises from the self-serving aspect that ignores the needs of a substantial group of users.

It has been suggested that I should use EasyFind.  However, this is slow because it uses a brute force methed.  I can now recommend HoudaSpot, which is fast because it is a Spotlight front end.  It is the way Spotlight could/should have been.  It's amazingly sophisticated with the options for Venn diagram searching.  But it also provides a simple find-by-file-name.  Since I am prepared to pay over-the-odds for a mac I am also prepared to pay 30 bucks to make it work properly, so don't get hung up on the cost.

Anyway I think you can forget about people extracting drivers to allow SL to run on a new mac.  I am stuck with ML on a new macbook air.  I can live with it except for the loss of Rossetta.  I plan to address this by using Parallels to host a virtual SL machine.  Parallels is a supprizingly good interface and the only indication you are working on a virtual machine is a slight reduction in performance.

What a time that we live in...people using virtualization on new macs to use SL...Think people of Apple never imagined that If only developers were such clever people like ordinary users and didnt upgrade their apps to be Lion+ it would be nice.

In the future even installing apps outside MAS can be to difficult or impossible.

If Apple can turn off Versions and properly fix Save-As then they can have my money for a new laptop and a couple of 27 inch screens. If not I might "invest" in an older Air that can run SL. It's like Windows 98 and then Windows XP where those instillation disks were gold compared to running Vista. iOS 6 Maps, what a joke. "Hello we would like to announce reduced functionality, which you have been waiting over 2 years for." Not cool Apple. Not when you charge a premium.

    Steve,

I'm not usually there in the day-time. If you call them again, ask for my mobile number, or give them yours - bit reluctant to put it on this forum. If you call in at one of the restaurants ask them to phone me, and I'll come straight there.

    Hello Everybody,

I just tries 10.8.2 and... it is the same cr4p. I mean: I disabled the autosave/versions junk using the ApplePersistance flag, but in this case there's no "Save As..." in the file menu, not even when pressing the Option key.

I'm ****3d off. I am not going to try ML anymore. Let's see if 10.9 Aristocat-or-whatever-cat-it-is will be built by software engineers and not iDiots.

Stefano, the latest version of ML is supposed to let you use Save-As in the original way. I don't think you need to do the ApplePersistance flag any more. Please check with others here because I thought that had kind of fixed it.

It also may now be getting in the way of Save As working as 10.8.2 intends.

From what I recall of my limited experimentation, I think Stefano is correct. As I understand it, the ApplePersistance bit controls AutoSave and Versioning, and the price of turning this off is to also lose the Save As capability.

I think everyone has to reach his or her own conclusions about what is most important. I can live with AutoSave and Versioning if it means I can also have Save As back. So that is my situation on my home Mac right now. I've upgraded to 10.8.2. As my home Mac is a newer Mini, Snow Leopard was never a practical option.

On the other hand, while I could now upgrade my work iMac to Mountain Lion, I'm really in no hurry to change from Snow Leopard. I don't find the new features of ML compelling enough to change, even though I would at least have Save As available now.

There would also be the downside of losing Rosetta. I have a lot of legacy databases in FileMaker Pro 6, and all of these would have to be converted to FileMaker Pro 10 (the latest version I have) before I could use them. This seems to be more trouble than it's worth right now.

So I don't see myself upgrading to Mountain Lion here at work until such time as Snow Leopard is no longer supported. I tend to agree with those who've said that Snow Leopard was, taken as a whole, Apple's finest operating system. I've not found much in the two that have come since that makes my Mac computing experience notably better.

I appreciate Apple's attempts to try to rectify this situation, and I'm glad it helps some users, but I'm still not satisfied. I need to have confidence that whenever I open any file, it will never be saved in any form or fashion until *I* decide to save it. In other words, restoration of Save As is only a halfway solution for me without the option to disable versions at the same time.

At least, that's the way it appears to me. I can't be sure, with all the different scenarios and options involved. Saving something used to be so simple. Sigh.

So many things are annoying with the new iOS6. It is the same philosophy, we know better than you do how your operating system should look. Things you can't turn off that you don't want. The war for Save-As has not been a war for the overall psychology of Apple. That is still the arrogant profit driven dictatorship that forced Versions on us in the first place. Now there is a new battle in the same war. iOS6. This is a really sad time for us Apple users.
