How do I disable the "restore last session" feature in safari 5

There is no set preferences in the system or application, but people have had luck using the solution here:

You can also hold down "Shift" while clicking Safari to skip the loading of your last session when it is launched. This must be done each time though.

Yes, I'm irritated by that 'restoring tabs' too. Apple seriously need to give us an option to disable it. Seriously, not everyone wants to continue where they left off. I want my browser to start clean.

Same here, I have been having this problem ever since I upgraded to Lion and the latest build of Safari. I knew I shouldn't have given Safari another chance.

To disable this feature:

• Click the "Apple Menu"
• Click "System Preferences"
• Click the "General Tab"
• Disable/Uncheck the box "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

Just disable the option that Apple provided and get on with your life.

If your truly stuck in a loop and that doesn't resolve it, you can do the following. FYI: This is also the answer to the question posted in your link at the very end. I've copied and pasted it for your convenience.

Question: If anyone knows of a startup key/mouse combination to avoid restoring from the Saved State file for a previously crashed application, I'd appreciate hearing how to do that. I searched and did not find anything.

Answer:

• Hold down the "Shift" key
• Open/Click on Safari
• Let go of the "Shift" key

Safari will now open in a new state.

You can also hold down option and select Quit from File. It closes all items for the next application launch.

It's not "incorrect" if it works. I did it and it works. If you don't want to have to worry about remembering to hold keys down everytime you start up an app, if you don't want to shut down resume on every app, then this is an ideal solution.

No worries. 😎 I may have misunderstood the original poster. I assumed -- because this is what was irking me -- that he/she wanted to turn off the feature in Safari only. That's what I meant by no set preference for that. It's either all or nothing in system preferences. And the holding down a key option is a workaround, not really a solution.

Personally, I found using the terminal hint to be the best method until Apple incorporates a by-app solution.
