Gray background after wakeup after lion upgrade?

I have a MacPro i upgraded to Lion, it is a 2008 model with 2 Dell 27" monitors, and a ATI 5770 video card. After i upgraded to Lion everything seemed to work ok. the next morning i went back to the machine to wake use it again and when the monitors woke up, the background on the main monitor is grey, not the galaxy background that is the default. THe second monitor does not have this problem. Th only way i have been able to reset it to the image is to reboot, which i rarley do with this machine, It will stay on for months at a time, and i reboot only as needed. I have tried using the desktop & Screensave from system preferences and it does not do anything. I have even set it to change every 5 mins and it had no effect.

ANyone have a clue?

I've been researching this issue for a while and I disabled my screensaver but still left on display sleep (deactivating the screensaver for lcds is no big deal and will not harm the monitor). I haven't gotten the grey screen since.

If you like your screensaer but prefer not logging out or using terminal and performing: killall Dock

to get rid of the gray screen after wakeup, you can setup a hot corner in system preferences to put the monitors to sleep and then wake them back up using your mouse. Quick and easy.

Good luck all!

We are exhibiting the same problem on a Macbook Air with a clean install of Lion, upgraded to 10.7.2.

Just for the record, many of you have stated that the solutions is the "killdock" command. This is not a solution; it is simply a work around. It doesn't solve the overall problem.

One of the posters here mentioned that the login screen, while grey, does clear up some when the pointer is moved. Squares of clear space occur in the pointers wake. We see the same behaviour on our main screen (the MBA's screen). Do any of the others of you see this problem?

While for most of us, this problem is cosmetic, meaning it does not affect the functionality of our Macs, it is annoying and does not meet the expectations of Apple's clients.

Apple, please resove this as soon as possible!

Well, I fear that Mac OSX 10.7.3 did not fix the problem, although it did apparently deal with some awake-from-sleep problems. I had hopes because, for a number of times after upgading to 10.7.3, the gray screen didn't arise. But it did occur again this morning after a good night's deep sleep.

My configuration is with an HP 2475w being driven by a MBP using NVIDIA graphics. Please Apple, this is clearly a very commonly occuring problem that you've known about for a long time; why can't you fix it?

Having the same issue with my 8 month old Mac Book Pro (among other problems), but since PRAM I have been ok. My screen was doing the same as Candy's, after sleep mode cursor erased screen saver only to expose gray screen was my log in. So I was able to use password, but this was not acceptable. It is a system glitch which I'm sure Apple themselves have had happen with their own machines. Until they get a "new" OS....

Same here. No fix after upgrade to 10.7.3 !

Why can't Apple resolve this already? Two Apple devices not properly functioning together?! I have a MacBook Pro (as well as a MacBook Air) and using them with my Apple Cinema Display leads to a gray background after wakeup!

Can anybody remove the "Correct Answers" and "Helpful Answers" flag? Maybe that way Apple will view this thread and solve this problem!?!

I tried killing the dock process I do recall the steps to create the issue. I had an external dvi monitor plugged in, closed the screen to quit for the day and of course the main display switched over to the external monitor. since I had all ready turned off my magicmouse I opened the display, unplugged the external monitor. Waited for it to switch back to the LCD and then closed the lid to put it to sleep. This morning when I sat back down I plugged in the external display and opened the lid. It came up with a background on the external display and the linin background on Desktop 1. The other desktops are all ok.

This is a bug in my books. I have not tried the loging off/or rebooting. Shouldnt need too 😟.

UPDATE

I logged off and back on with the external monitor off and that fixed it.

Howdy,

Having the same issue on a late 2009 MacBook Pro connected to a HP LP2475W running the latest Lion update.

Besides a gray backgound all my windows are rearranged and have strange proportions. All windows have their height reduced by half or more and there position has changed to.

Now my MacBook is connected via the small displayport adapter to the HDMI input. My HP LP2475W also has a displayport so I bought a small to normal displayport adapter. Now the behavior is different, when I connect my iPhone or iPad to the USB, the screen goes blank which does not happen when connected to the HDMI port. But the strange thing is that the window proportions and positions do not change after waking up and I did not have the gray background issue either. Very strange stuff.

Recently my other older MacBook Pro which is connected to a Apple 24" screen started to show the same windows random positioning and dimension changes after it was upgraded to Lion. Did not have the gray background issue but that might be due to the fact that on this MacBook, I only use a single desktop.

Anyway I hope Apple fixes this odd behavior soon.

Not sure if this will help but I have been having similar issues with 10.7.3 on a 8 month old Macbook Pro. While in "Settings" you can try either changing Security & Privacy (General) "Log out after--" the time amount to work with your "Settings">Energy Saver>Computer Sleep & Display Sleep to be longer than Log out. You can try, it worked for me for other OS glitches.

I was in touch with Apple Support last week on another matter and, after that was nicely resloved by a very helpful agent, I mentioned this issue. He put me on hold while he read enough of this thread to realize it was indeed a problem worth checking into; he found no indication at that time that Apple had the issue on its docket. He asked me to do a couple of quick experiments (like seeing if the issue occurred when logging-in under a new account -- which it did), and, on the basis of these, he was quite willing to promote the issue.

He called me back a couple of days ago to assure me that Apple is now aware of the problem and will be (I hope is) working on it. I thank the chap at Apple and we can now all just hope for the best.
