lion mail exchange message moving issues

there are dozens of issues with Lion, it feels so unstable, freezes constantly, essentially crashes when time machine boots up, on and on and on.... this is the first time i've ever been genuinely dissapointed in a mac OS full update, just awful

but the biggest issue for me right now is that i use mail.app for my work email form an exchange server, and i'm running into several instances where deleting or moving messages from my inbox simply doesn't take hold, and after a few minutes the messages miraculously reappear in my inbox, not where i put them

this does not happen to every single message, and it does not happen all of the time, it seems to go in spurts, and typcially requires a restart (as so many other issues have with Lion)

i'm not really looking for a fix, because i'm guessing there is no user-level fix for it, i'm just hoping that this gets passed along to the powers that be so it's resolved in the first update to Lion

anyone else having similar issues, whether with exchange accounts or otherwise?

Same problem here. When I try to archive mails into folders on my mac, the application looks like it's doing its job. However, when I open the folder, there's no mail inside. Back to the Inbox, the mail is still there.

However, when I delete mails, this seems to work.

As an aside, I've not experience any crashes or freezes that Benjamin has. All in all, it's been a smooth upgrade other than this worrying mail issue.

I have exactly the same problem with the mail app on Lion trying to access an Exchange server (but not any other stability or performance issues).

I dont have a cure but this may help to avoid restarting Mail app when it misbehaves:

When in Mail app select 'Activity' from the 'Window' drop down menu. A little 'activity' window will pop up. When all is well this window will display some activity and then become empty. When Mail app start misbehaving, the Activity window will display 'Changing Flags' and will just get stuck there. You can click the red button next to it to cancel 'Changing Flags' and after that Mail will work for a while moving and deleting messages. But it will get stuck again after a while. And at some point it will get stuck on other operations and you may need to restart Mail app.

Perhaps this workaround will make it more bearable while someone more knowledgeable can come up with a proper fix...

BTW if I have a lot of messages to move or delete, I use the web interface to our Exchange server, or an iPad which still work OK.

Also BTW - I have rebuilt spotlight indices, did a fresh mail account install, rebuilt mailboxes, cleared all exchange folders, removed all exchange rules, etc, etc. Nothing worked.

I'm not holding my breadth for apple to fix this quickly... 10.7.2 seems to be all about iCloud 😟

Have any of you tried the following:

  1. Close Mail
  2. Open up System Preferences - Open Mail, Contacts, and Calendars - Remove the Exchange account
  3. In Finder browse to "~/Library/Mail/V2" (your folders may be located under a different file, mine were located under "V2")
  4. Find your Exchange account folder starting with "EWS-" and delete it
  5. Go back to System Preferences - Open Mail, Contacts, and Calendars - Re-add the Exchange account
  6. Open Mail

I noticed after doing this that my Mail connection with Exchange seemed to work more reliably.

Same problem here. Its becoming more regular. After closing and reopening mail it goes ok for a while, then stalls again. Problem is it stills any new mail coming in. I have to open activity window and stop it changing flags before I can receive new emails.

Mail has been completely unreliable since the update to Lion on the main machine.

When it stops working (always this means unable to send; Mail downloads perfectly well), I have a perfect internet connection, and onnection Doctor reports:

"connection and login to server succeeded"

and the message that tells me, "Huston, we have a problem":

smtp.me.com:kit_L Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that userame and Password are correct"

and of course, they are.

Very frustrating, and yesterday this necessitated opening, copying, and sending from me.com—a huge timewaster for time-critical responses.

I am going to post on the feedback thread, too.

I have to agree with Benjamin. This is the worst product I have ever encountered from Apple and I am an Apple fan.

I am experiencing the same behavior with moving emails that Benjamin has described. I am able to move the email to the trash folder but then I can not move it back to the in box. Also once it fails to move and I try to open it I get a "Loading" wheel that never goes away and it hangs until I close out.

This is only one of many problems I am encountering with this OS. I feel like I am a MS Windows user again. It is very disappointing.
