ant lodged in screen

Anyone else had this one?

An ant has found its way into my G5 screen and is stuck between the outer screen and the panel. I have no idea how to get it out, but you can imagine how annoying it is.

Seems to have stopped moving, but I am not sure if I think that is a good thing or not!

Help!

ddoe-

Welcome to Apple Discussions. I have had critters in my machine but not like this. You have got to take a picture of that!

I do not know which iMac you have (you can update your profile to reflect), but some can be taken apart by the user. I do not know if this will allow you to get close enough to the ant or not, butit may be worth a try.

How far into the field of view is it? It seems that in a few days it will start getting crumbly (ants here in the states get crumbly and fall apart when they die. I am assuming Australian ants are the same !?!?). Maybe you can gently tap onthe screen and cause all of the ant remains to tumble out via the same path the lil' critter got in there in the first place.

Did I mention you've got to take a picture?

Good luck and let us know how this turns out.

Hi,

thanks for the post, I hope that if all else fails my ant will get crumbly and fall out.

I have a G5 Imac, the 20" screen, to be honest I've not had the back off yet (just 4 months old). It is a small ant, so thankfully not apparently damaging anything or obscuring the screen much, but as you can imagine, annoying.

I'll take a screen shot and let you know if I work out a solution.

cheers

You should delete "cookies" more often, the ant may have been attracted to them 🙂

Seriously I recommend you call tech support and see if you can talk to hardware person. There has to be some sort of gap that may open and close a small amount because of barometric pressure changes or something. Maybe turning off the unit so that it cools and opens the gap would allow the ant to be moved.

My studio display has dead bugs in the hollow acrylic legs, but they don't hurt anything.

Keep us advised.

Has anybody seen the movie "Pi"? Be on the lookout for outrageous stock market predictions and/or life-changing religious revelations!

Seriously, though, if you do have to open up your G5 the "Back Cover and Stand" PDF on the page Baby Boomer linked to will tell you how. It's very easy; I did it myself to get the dust out and shut up the fans. Good luck!

Hi,

to misquote Monty Python, it is now a dead ant, this ant is no more, he has crawled his last, he is an ex ant. But still lodged in my screen. Thanks for all your posts, I am going to try the 'Crumbly Ant' approach for a couple of days, and then try some tech support if this fails.

It is a very big screen, and a very small ant, but I know it will drive me crazy if not dealt with, keep posted for ant progress.

cheers

" I am interested in learning how this problem will be rectified, it could happen to any one of us."
If you have a problem with ants where your computer is located can you change rooms?
If that is not feasable, maybe you need to keep "spraying" and/or find some other ant killer alternative to keep the ants at bay. Speak to an exterminater perhaps for tips?

Hi,

an ant update, and some good news. The 'crumbly ant' advice worked, pretty much, I had to move the mac today and in the process the rapidly disintegrating ant bits fell to the bottom of the screen where they are now pretty much invisible (a couple of legs stick up).

As it happened, I had to move my desk and the mac from one room to another, which not only helped the ant situation but uncovered the remains of a jelly bean that had been eaten from the inside out by, you guessed it, ants! Which explains why the problem occured as we have no other ant problems.

Thanks for the advice, and if I get any more interesting screen 'bugs' I'll be sure to post it. Would be interesting if an apple engineer could post on how it got into the screen itself(?)

cheers

Oddly, there are a fair number of posts around here about ants in computers. (Some species of ants love electric currents for some reason--in my part of the world it's not uncommon for traffic signals to malfunction due to the size of the ant nests in them, and I know a lot of folks who've lost stereo equipment to ants.) The best solution appears to be fresh mint, which the ants really hate and therefore avoid, although it is kind of weird to be using an ibook on a bed of mint.

Now, the thunderflies are a whole 'nother issue…
